Thank you to all of you who have followed my blog this year! I had a blast writing my memories here and I plan to continue blogging with a new blog in the near future.

Congratulations to our new titleholders: Erin Connor--Miss VT OT 2010, and Caroline Bright Miss VT 2010...I look forward to following your journeys!

All of the 2010 contestants were so beautiful and wonderful to be around...I look forward to hearing about all of their future endeavors as well!

A special shout out goes to Courtney Billings--our 2009 CMN Champion Child who competed at the Miss Vermont Outstanding Teen Pageant this year. A year ago she was crowned on-stage as the CMN Champion Child and this year she was honored with the spirit award at the 2010 pageant. One of the best parts of my year as Miss Vermont was getting to know Courtney. I am so inspired by this young woman who has never let her illness of cystic fibrosis get in her way. She has done incredible things in her lifetime and I am SO proud to call her my friend! She is a true inspiration--and combines the CMN and Miss America Organizations together beautifully.

I'd like to share with you all my farewell video. It played at the 2010 pageant and I gave my final walk at the end of the video while being escorted by my father. A truly special moment. Thank you Harry Benoit for putting so much time into making this beautiful video. I will treasure it forever.

A letter to the 2010 Contestants

I cannot stop thinking about all of the ladies who are competing for the title of Miss Vermont this weekend. I remember this time a year ago-- the chaos that comes along with packing, the final preparations, and the strong desire to consume massive amounts of chocolate while making sure every piece of wardrobe fits perfectly. There were tons of little things to worry about and to possibly over-think--and for any contestant who may be reading this, I am sending positive energy your way!

The anxious/excited/nervous/determined/curious/prepared etc. feelings that you may be feeling right now are completely normal...and to be honest, I have these same feelings right now too!

I am anxious to know the results. I am anxious to get this fun weekend started--because something that I love about the Miss America Organization is the incredible women who participate in this program. I've made so many friendships by participating in Miss Vermont and then becoming Miss Vermont, and I know I will leave this weekend with more friendships as well. I had the opportunity to meet you all at orientation, and I know we're going to have fun. It's because of all of you that I am excited! It's incredible to watch a dream unfold.

But at the same time, I am nervous. I'm nervous because for the past year I have lived and breathed the title of Miss Vermont. It's something that I've treasured and it's a title that I worked hard to fulfill with grace and gratitude every day. I will truly miss being your Miss Vermont--I feel nervous because I'm not sure what the next chapter of my life will bring, but I suppose that's what makes life exciting.

I am determined to keep fulfilling the goals that I've set this year and to continue living out the role of Miss Vermont. Being Miss Vermont has been an incredible gift, because along with all of the skills I've developed, I've been able to see first-hand the power that one person can have on making a positive difference. I was talking to a friend earlier today about how I will miss being Miss Vermont because of the reactions I get from children. I was telling my friend that when I have a crown on, the smile on a child's face is so precious...and when I talk to that child, I feel like they really listen and they understand the message I am trying to send their way. Because my platform is Youth Empowerment, I feel like I've been able to inspire many of our children to realize their potential for greatness. With the crown and title of Miss Vermont, I feel like I've been able to show children that they are valuable assets for our communities; I hope I've been able to show them that they are so special and so important. Miss Vermont is a role model, and I will miss that responsibility.

My friend responded to this story in a wonderful way--he helped me see this transition I'm about to face in a whole new light. He said: "Laura, kids notice your smile before they see the crown."

I may not be able to wear to crown much longer, but I will always be able to share a smile...and a smile is certainly a powerful thing. I am determined to continue inspiring positive change and making a difference. If I've left any legacy after this year...I hope people will remember me for my positive spirit, my genuine smile, and for being an approachable and warm Miss Vermont. If any of those qualities were recognized by someone, I know I have succeeded.

I am curious to see what this year will bring for the new Miss Vermont and all of the ladies who continue to work with our organization. The first thing I was told after I became Miss Vermont was that "this year is what you make of it"--every Miss Vermont has a unique experience. We will be introducing local titles for our contestants this July...I am curious and excited to see what all of our wonderful participants do within the next year! There is much opportunity for greatness.

I am prepared. Thankfully my Miss America wardrobe still fits (although I sure have gone back to eating my chocolate and cheeseburgers!). I have practiced my talent and spent many hours working on the opening number. I have been working on saying all of my final thank yous. I have been having a wonderful final week. I feel prepared and ready to crown the next Miss Vermont, because I know I've exhausted myself by living out this role to the best of my ability. I gave it my all and loved every minute of it. I have no regrets because I know everything happens for a reason. I am thankful that I've been able to stay in school while being Miss Vermont and I appreciate our organization for understanding the importance of both roles; Miss VT and College Senior. The things I'll miss most as Miss Vermont are things that I can continue to do...I can continue being a role model, I can continue being an advocate for the Children's Miracle Network and for youth empowerment. I can continue working with the Miss Vermont Organization...and I am excited to add a new role to my list; mentor for Miss VT 2010.

This post is already longer than I intended, but I have a little bit of last minute advance. I'll start my mentor role in advance:

Ladies, you have all worked hard and prepared for this moment. When you arrive at the Sheraton tomorrow, just live in the moment. Enjoy getting to know each other. Have fun at the appearances we're doing this weekend. Don't worry about the competition itself...you are ready. You've already thought about it enough. Instead, you have a great opportunity to step in the shoes of Miss Vermont this weekend before one of you is crowned Miss Vermont.

Something that I've learned is that the competition is one weekend. That's it. It is one night. The title of Miss Vermont is for a year. Focus on the job of Miss Vermont. Don't worry about your swimsuit walk, your talent...don't worry about on-stage question--I promise you'll be able to answer your question! Just live in the moment and enjoy--it's too quick of a weekend to not enjoy the experience. Not everyone has the courage or the confidence that you possess--be proud of your accomplishments, be proud of who you are. This weekend, let your inner beauty shine. Show the judges, the contestants, the volunteers, the audience- the person that you are. You are already a leader, a role model. Love yourself. Stay positive. Believe in yourself.

You need to know that this is an individual competition. There is no use worrying about any of the other contestants because you have no control over their performance. You have no control over what the judges are looking for. You only have control of yourself; your attitude, your presence, your gratitude, your positivity, your mindset. Stay focused on why you want this job and why you will make an incredible Miss Vermont. I know you will...now, you just have to continue believing that you are Miss Vermont. Be your authentic self. Do not try to mimic or copy any past titleholder--because trust me, if you are not true to yourself, this will be a difficult year for you. You need to be comfortable in your own skin. There is criticism that comes with this role, there will be stressful days...but you need to keep your passion for this job and what the Miss America Organization stands for front and center. Because although there will be difficult days, I can honestly say that this year is by far the most rewarding year of my life. I am not the same person that I was this time a year ago. I've blossomed in a positive way, and I thank this role and the people in my life for my growth.

Before I arrived at the Sheraton last year, my mom gave me this quote to keep in my mind:
"Whether you think you can, or think you can't...either way you're right." -Henry Ford.

Believe that you can. Stay positive. Enjoy the experience. And know that win or lose, you are always capable of great things.

I cannot wait to see you all tomorrow! Rest up! And hopefully you're not up all night packing like I will be. Is it really already 2am?

More memories and Memorial Day Weekend!

Hello Friends!
I'm hoping to slip in a couple updates this week...my last week as Miss Vermont. I cannot believe it! Just a few more days... It's funny because throughout this year, any time I felt stressed or needed to get back in the right mindset, I would watch my crowning moment and instantly feel grateful and re-energized. That moment is always a simple reminder of the gratitude I feel towards all the people who helped me become Miss Vermont and all who helped me become the Laura Hall I am today, because of their support during my year as Miss Vermont. It's crazy to think that come Saturday, there will be a new crowning moment.

This past week has been filled with rehearsals, and press interviews, and some great appearances. Since I last blogged, I interviewed with CK Coin from 98.9 WOKO, John from KOOL 105, and today I went in bright and early for an interview with Nolan and Tara from Star 92.9. Our pageant emcee, Nan O'brien is affiliated with Star 92.9 so it was great to talk with Nolan and Tara about that connection. For those of you who know Nan, you may be pleased to know that she too is a Miss America participant...she competed in Oklahoma while she was in college and earned enough scholarship money to pay for the majority of her schooling. It's wonderful to have her support and to have her as an emcee this Saturday!

My grandmother has taken on a special project for me...she has been altering the dress I won Miss Vermont in, (which was too big a year ago and is too big now) so that I can wear it at either the teen or miss pageant. The blue dress I won this title in was a last-minute decision, it nearly fell off (it's strapless) when my crowning moment occurred, but it's nice to come full circle and wear the dress I won Miss VT in, on my last day as Miss VT (it'll have a strap this time!). I am thrilled to crown the new Miss Vermont in my gorgeous Gregory Ellenburg gown! Why am I talking about gowns? Beats me...back to my update.

On Thursday, after I had 2 radio interviews, I drove out to St. Mary's School in Middlebury. Nikki Juvan, Miss VT 1996 is a kindergarten teacher there, and requested that I come visit. It was such a special appearance because it was my last school visit (I think at least) as Miss Vermont. I spoke with kindergarten, 1st grade, 5th grade and 6th grade students. We had a lot of fun and hopefully they all realize that they are leaders and capable of great things!

On Friday, I met Sue Lackey and Legacy Rhoads--my princess at Vermont Children's Hospital. Sue Victory, a director at the hospital gave us a full tour of the hospital. It was wonderful to see how all of the CMN money we raise gets put to good use, and as always it was nice to see some of the children who get taken care of at the hospital. I met a sweet young boy, and I saw one of the most precious babies in the NICU. Most of the children were sleeping during my visit so I left some autograph cards. I will be returning to the hospital this Friday with all of the Miss contestants. I am so thankful for the friendship I made with the 2009 CMN Champion Child, Courtney Billings. She is an incredible leader and advocate for bringing awareness about Cystic Fibrosis. I will be walking with her at the CF walk this September! She is such an inspiration and a wonderful person. I am so proud of her confidence growth this year...she's participating in the Outstanding Teen Program this weekend, what an incredible story! All of the children I've met at the VT Children's Hospital are wonderful, and it makes me so thankful that our organization partners with the Children's Miracle Network.

Saturday was the Essex Memorial Day Parade! Legacy came with me and we had a blast with our wonderful driver, Russ, who drove us in a beautiful red convertible. Check out some photos below!

Tonight I have rehearsal with our male dancers...and then I will be packing for Miss Vermont weekend, which begins Thursday!! Wow, time flies!

Hello Vermont!

I must say that it is so good to be home full-time! Since the last time I wrote, so much has happened...including graduating from Assumption College! And because I am now officially a college graduate, I am now here in Vermont full-time...the first time since summer when I was crowned Miss VT, and I am thrilled to finish off my year strong! My schedule has been jam-packed since I've arrived home, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

The last time I wrote, I told you about the Vermont HAS Talent competition that occurred on April 3rd. Below are a couple of photos from the event:

After the show, my mom and I went to Al's to get our first creemees of the season! Mmmmm ice cream!

April was an incredibly busy month at school! I finished up my college courses and my duties as a student government executive. The month flew by and before I knew it, it was May 1st and I was at the 2010 Miss New Hampshire Pageant! (What an incredible production!!) It was so nice to catch up with Miss Mass, Amanda Kelly who attended the pageant, and I'm glad I was there to see my dear friend Lindsey pass on her title. What an incredible year she had! I cannot believe that the pageant season has begun! Congrats to the new Miss New Hampshire...Krystal!

The weeks in May have been flying by! On May 15th, I officially became a graduate! This year has been so busy with being Miss Vermont and a college student, but this year has been so rewarding and unforgettable! I am very proud to have graduated with honors!

This week is my first full week home as a graduate, and it has been busy! On Monday, May 17th, I did a 20 minute radio spot on WVMT...I was on the Charlie and Ernie show. It was a great time chatting with these guys and promoting the 2010 pageant. The photo is a little blurry but it was so much fun crowning Charlie!

On Tuesday, I spent the day in the dance studio working on the choreography for our opening number! It means a lot to be able to choreograph my final opening number routine. On Wednesday I met with the wonderful Kate Whalen who is also choreographing part of the opening number...the big surprise of the routine! (I'll give you a sneak peak...I'm going to be dancing with male dancers! woohoo!) Make sure to come check out the pageant!

This Thursday I went to newly renovated Red Clover Salon in Essex, where my wonderful hair sponsor Mary Motto gave me a quick trim! I haven't had a hair cut since before Miss America! My hair feels fresh and healthy again....thanks Mary!

Later on Thursday I traveled to Middlebury with my grandmother/wonderful traveling companion to film a half-hour segment for the Middlebury show "It's Local" with MCTV. Jerry Germaine asked great questions...it was a lot of fun to reflect on my year and future goals!

Today (Friday) I met with the very first Miss Vermont Princess! That's right...the Miss Vermont Scholarship Org. now officially has a princess program for young girls ages 5--10. Legacy is my princess for the remainder of the year! I spent some time today with Legacy and her twin sister Bliss at my director Sue Lackey's home. Both are such sweet, smart, and funny young ladies! I look forward to some upcoming appearances with Legacy including the Essex Memorial Day Parade on May 29th!

This Sunday is the Miss Vermont Contestant Orientation! I cannot wait to meet all of the contestants and officially meet the new Miss Vermont! Although we won't know who she is until June 5th!

Spring Cleaning and some Catching up!

Wow—I am in desperate need of a blog entry! So much has happened, time has flown and I cannot believe that I have less than 2 months before I crown Miss Vermont 2010! I also cannot believe that I have less than a month left as a college student! I graduate May 15th. What an incredibly busy year this has been—it’s very bizarre to think that come June 6th I will be starting a fresh chapter in my life. So much change and transitioning is going on right now for me-- It’s a combination of scary and exciting. If my life were a book, there would be a cliff-hanger after every page—there is no certain plan for my life after college/my reign—but I know that I will be doing something great. We’ll have to wait and see what it is!
The past four years I have worked hard to be a good student and a strong student leader. I have worked hard to be the best Laura Hall that I can be, and a great Miss America (well, that was the goal!). These were the major focuses in my life starting at the age of 18. Every day I thought about what I needed to do to work towards these goals—I lived each day with these goals in mind. I guess it just really is bizarre for me to think that very soon I am going to have to start working towards something else. But that’s what makes life exciting. I’m a very ambitious and determined person—I’m looking forward to seeing what I aim to pursue next and what kind of journeys I will take. I will forever be grateful and proud of the skills and experiences I’ve gained through my Miss America experience. I feel empowered and motivated to do big things! But again, I’m in that limbo phase where nothing after June 5th is certain—so in the meantime, I’m just trying to enjoy each day, live in the moment, and make as many memories as possible.

Sorry for that rant! Now back to updates!

Back in March, during my spring break from college, I jam-packed my days with Miss Vermont activities. From attending a production meeting for the Miss VT 2010 Pageant, to meeting with my director, to visiting sponsors to Mettawee Mania and the Change Round Up for the Vermont Children’s Hospital. What a fun, crazy week!

Mettawee Mania is an annual talent show in Pawlet, Vermont, and Miss Vermont is invited to emcee and perform at the event every year. Rod Hawkins, who is the producer of the event, was also one of the judges who gave me the honor of becoming Miss Vermont 2009. It was wonderful to catch up with him and meet his wonderful wife Deb, and their son Luke. The Hawkins Family were so gracious and offered for my mother and I to stay with them for the weekend while in Pawlet. The small town is about 2 hours away from Burlington, so it was nice to have a comfortable place to stay while at these weekend-long appearance. I had the privilege of staying in the Hawkins Family’s very own “Miss Vermont” room---a guest room that is filled with photos of former Miss Vermonts who have helped out with Mettawee Mania. It is so neat to think that my photo will be on a wall in that bedroom. What a neat tradition.
I arrived in Pawlet on Friday, March 12th, at 9am. As soon as I got into town, I spent the next three hours giving school presentations at the Mettawee Community School. I had the opportunity to spread the message of “youth empowerment” and the importance of setting goals to students from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I was so impressed with the students and their willingness to participate and share their ideas with the class. Many of the students I met were also performers in the talent show—Pawlet, has a lot of great talent! Perhaps a future Miss Vermont will be from this town!

After my school visits, I was greeted by Luke Hawkins, who escorted my mom and I back to his home. We unpacked a little, ate lunch, and then by 1pm, I was off to greet and thank the sponsors of Mettawee Mania. Luke was kind to be my chauffeur—we traveled around to visit with 12 different sponsors for the next three hours. One of my favorite stories from this trip was how poor Luke’s truck broke down while we were visiting a sponsor—luckily though, the sponsor was a car repair shop—Bardin’s Tire. Too funny! It worked out fine—Deb Hawkins dropped off another car for us, and then we were back to work! While thanking sponsors, I also had the opportunity to visit a farm that was making maple syrup. Such a neat process to make that sugary goodness.

When I finished greeting the sponsors, we headed back to the Hawkins’ home for some dinner and then off we went to rehearsal for the big show, which was scheduled for the next night. I got to see all of the talent, and had a great time mingling with all of the performers. There was a group of middle school girls who were such a riot! I had a blast with them, and they had me do something that was a first for me as Miss Vermont—they asked me to sign their stomachs! Haha—no worries, I got parental permission before marking their skin with a sharpie. It was too funny. I’m hoping to sign a bald head before I pass on the title. A girl can only hope right? Haha!

By the time rehearsals were finished, I was exhausted and headed right to bed! The next morning my mom and I toured Manchester, Vermont and then we headed back to the house to spend time with the Hawkins Family. The show came and went before I knew it, but it was such a successful night! Over 500 people attended—and I had a great time taking pictures and signing autographs after the show. Miss Vermont 2010 is in for a real treat with this appearance! I will not forget this experience any time soon.

On Sunday, right after getting back from Pawlet, I headed over to the WalMart in Williston, Vermont where I was helping 98.9 WOKO and the Vermont Children’s Hospital promote the Change Round Up—where all the money was going towards Vermont Children’s Hospital, which a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. The Miss America Organization has a great partnership with CMN, so it was wonderful to be a part of this event. All of the money raise goes directly to our Vermont Hospital. I had so much fun mingling with all of the incredible people who came out to donate money—so many personal stories touched my heart—especially of a young 12 year old who raised over $700 to donate to a hospital which helped save her life as a baby. To see so many young people donating and raising money was very inspiring and made me proud of the youth in our state. I had a great time hanging out with Courtney Billings, who was the 2009 Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child for Vermont. Courtney is such an inspiration young woman and so much fun to talk with and goof around with! I’m trying to convince her to compete for VT Outstanding Teen—she has it all! Such a sweet and giving gal. I also had the opportunity to talk on the radio about the Miss Vermont Scholarship Program and the event taking place over the weekend. It was a long day, but very fun and rewarding.

On Monday morning, I headed over to Fletcher Allen Hospital where we wrapped up the Change Round Up! I spoke on the radio again several times, while taking photos with the generous people who donated money to the cause. Over the weekend, over $120,000 was raised for the Vermont Children’s Hospital! Incredible! Right after the event, I headed right back to school for my 2:30pm class—what a busy spring break—I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

On April 3rd, the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization held “Vermont Has Talent”—a fundraiser to increase our scholarship fund for the 2010 pageant. What a success! I was asked to be one of the judges—and I was surprised at how difficult it is to be a judge—especially when all of the talent was fabulous! There was a very cute 8-year-old boy who played the ukulele at the fastest speed I’ve ever seen, a variety of talented singers, and singer/song-writers, two dancers, a comedian, and then the winner was 13 year old Cheyenne Prescott of Chester, Vermont who sang “When You Believe”—I am thrilled to have her perform at the 2010 pageant. She was wonderful!

Dr. Steve Taubman, who was a fabulous mock interview judge for me this fall, was the emcee of the show! He is a magician and hypnotist—after the talent portion, while the judges were deliberating, he performed a hypnotist act where he successfully hypnotized about 12 audience members on stage. I caught the end of his act and I couldn’t stop laughing! He did a great job—so much fun! I’m looking forward to next year’s event!

He recently had his 11th birthday—Happy Birthday Harry! I've got a feeling...

Hello Friends,

Where has the time gone?! It feels like just yesterday I was dancing on stage with 52 amazing women in our Joseph Ribkoff dresses and DSW shoes (Thank you sponsors!) to “I’ve Got a Feeling.” Knowing that one month has already passed since the time I first arrived in Las Vegas is really hard to believe. All I can say is what an incredible experience! Really. I feel so blessed, so honored, so proud to have been able to participate in Miss America 2010. Wow.

Ok, maybe I can say a little bit more. I just need to figure out where to begin. There is so much to share and so many people to thank. This experience is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life, and the best part is—my experience is not over! I am still Miss Vermont 2009, and I intend to live up my last few months with this title as much as possible! For all of the incredible opportunities and personal growth I’ve experienced, I owe it to the Miss America Organization to do as much good with this title as I can.

The weeks leading up to Miss America were incredibly busy. I need to thank my mom and step-dad Mike for driving 17 hours down to South Carolina to pick up my incredible wardrobe sponsored by Gregory Ellenburg. We starting driving down around 4 am on December 29th, (only a few hours after my 22nd birthday ended) and we started driving back home from SC at 8pm on December 31st. We celebrated the New Year in our rental car, and I believe we were in North Carolina at the time. Mike stopped at a convenience store to pick up some festive New Year’s hats and we rang in the New Year in a way I will never forget. My step-dad drove through the entire night, as my mom and I struggled to stay awake to keep him company. Thank you Mom and Mike for spending the New Year with me and traveling all of those miles!

My Send-Off Party was on January 9th at the Middle School I attended back in the early 2000s. The party was so much fun, and cannot believe how many people traveled to come to my send-off. Between family members, pageant friends, and my college friends, I felt overwhelmed with the love and support. I will never forget the way I felt at my send-off. Thank you to all of you who made it so special!

When January 20th rolled around (I remember waiting for this day to get here!) my grandmother and I flew in to Las Vegas a day early to get settled before my whirlwind of an adventure began.

On January 21st, the fun officially began. 8:30 am I attended registration, tried on my wardrobe and started filming segments for Miss America Behind the Crown. We had cameras following us all week, and I really enjoyed being a part of the behind-the-scenes work of a television show. All of crew members were really nice, fun, and talented. However, I have yet to see the full 1-hour special and Miss America Live show! (I’ve been so busy since coming back from Vegas! I’m hoping to watch them soon.) My roommate was Kristina Smaby Miss Wisconsin—I had so much fun rooming with her! She’s a sweetheart and a great friend. I’m looking forward to visiting her state someday.

All of the contestants were amazing, and it was great to get to know so many of them. I especially got to know our current Miss America, since our states both begin with “V”—we were in alphabetical order a lot throughout the week.

I have so much I want to share with you all, and many photos to upload here soon! I am embarrassed by how long it has taken me to update you all on my experience. At 7am on Sunday January 31st, I flew right back to Assumption College where I jumped back into being a student and a student leader. I resumed my role as Senate Speaker at our 8:20pm meeting that night—the night right after Miss America! These past few weeks I’ve been doing my best to catch up on sleep and catch up on the two weeks of school work I missed from being in Vegas. I still am not 100% caught up (which is why I need to cut this blog short tonight), but I am so thankful for my understanding professors and my incredibly supportive college! I returned to campus with photos of my Miss Vermont experience on a bulletin board, and I learned that Assumption College threw a Miss America Party (big screen viewing) in my honor. How incredible! And each day, I run into someone who congratulates me on my experience—I cannot thank all of the people in my life enough!

Before I wrap up the first of what appears to be several blogs that will reflect on my Miss America experience, I will say that I am so proud of my state, and I hope you know that I put my all into representing Vermont at Miss America. I enjoyed every moment in Las Vegas, and I still have to remind myself that I really accomplished a goal I set four years ago when I was 18. Although I would have loved to have been your Miss America, or even your first top 15 finalist, I left Miss America with no regrets, and I feel content with the way things worked out. I truly believed that I achieved the honor of being Miss Vermont and going to Miss America because of my belief in the power-of-positive-thinking, and I am happy with the way I presented myself and the results because I stayed true to my belief in positive thinking. I know I did not walk away with the crown, but during the entire experience, I felt like Miss America. I believed that I was going to be Miss America 2010, not once did I doubt my abilities, and all of the support I received help strengthen my belief in my goal and my belief in myself. Friends, there is no greater feeling than feeling like you are capable of something that means the world to you. I believed I was Miss America. My friends and family helped me feel like Miss America. And during my time in Vegas, I was overwhelmed with how many people from other states came up to talk to me and support me—even though they didn’t have to. Thank you all so much for believing in me and helping me to believe in myself! I’m trying not to repeat myself, but when I was not called into the top 15, I didn’t feel the immediate disappointment that some of my fellow sisters may have experienced. Sure, I wanted so badly to be called into the top, and I felt like my name was on the tip of Mario’s tongue each time he announced a new finalist, but when the Top 15 was complete, I still felt proud. I felt so proud with my hard work, and I was excited to watch my friends continue to work towards their dream. I believe that every contestant I was with would have been a great Miss America, and I can only hope that they all felt that in themselves the way that I felt it in myself—because no feeling in my life compares to this new found belief. I am ready to continue making positive changes and I’m excited that I still have time to make some impacts as Miss Vermont!

If any of my fellow Miss America sisters happen to stumble across my blog (although, I know how busy we all are, so it’s most likely unlikely), I want to share a message I received that means a lot to me from a friend:

“I just wanted to write and say thanks for being an inspiration! It was amazing to see someone I not only have met but like know out there on the national stage! (And, a quality individual who truly deserved to be there!) You reached for your dream, girl, and you got there! Seeing you on that national stage (and in the clips of the preshow) really made the world feel a little bit smaller, less intimidating and more attainable. People really can dream and achieve those dreams! So, I just wanted to say, Thanks for being you and always believing in your dreams!”

First I need to thank Jen Gonet, a former Assumption SGA friend for allowing me to read this and smile every day. I want to share this with my Miss America sisters because this not only applies to me, but to all of us. I hope we all recognize that we have made a difference in our communities, our states and even on a national level—and I want my Miss America sisters to know that you have all made an impact on my life and are all truly inspirations to me. I love you all—can’t wait to reunite in Vegas! Enjoy the rest of your reigns and stand in the light!

I cannot wait to be back in Vermont this upcoming weekend for Contestant Development Day! I will be spending the day with the lovely ladies looking into becoming Miss Vermont 2010. I am looking forward to being a mentor for these young women who have the opportunity to have what I consider to be a dream job.

Home for the Holidays

Hello Friends,

I hope you are all keeping warm and enjoying the holiday season! I apologize for my lack of blogging--it's been a busy month! Knowing that you are all busy with family and the holiday season, I will keep my update short!

Since coming home from college on December 10th, I have been in full-blown preparation mode, and enjoying every minute of it!

I picked up my talent music which was recorded locally here in Vermont! I was very fortunate enough to meet Brian McCarthy, who completely rearranged my music and served as director/producer and musician for my talent song! He did an incredible job, and teamed up with Lane Gibson who has an incredible studio space. Lane was so generous to donate his space and time to help put my music track together! It was such a neat experience to see the behind the scenes work that goes into recording a track. I have to give a huge thank you to Kate Whalen who provided the vocals for my song! The world works in mysterious ways--while at an appearance for the American Heart Association, I met Kate who sang at the event. As soon as she opened her mouth, I knew her voice was perfect for my song! I am so glad she was willing to lend me her talented voice for my talent track. On Tuesday, December 14th--Sue and I had a full day of Miss Vermont work together. We went over details for Contestant Development Day---make sure to sign up for the January 2nd event! It is going to be a very fun and informative day. If you attended last year, you will be seeing a completely different set of workshops-I'm very impressed with the hard work of the Miss Vermont Board. While in Sue's studio, we did a great deal of walking practice and discussed the upcoming weeks. After lunch we headed to visit with Dr. Palm in Colchester who was kind to sponsor a great teeth-whitening kit for me. I was so impressed with their facility and the friendly atmosphere. I hope to see Dr. Palm again soon--what a great personality! He has a great smile too!

After leaving the dentist office, Sue and I headed to meet with our newest sponsor, MD Cosmetic. I had a great time with all of the ladies at MD Cosmetic! I received a facial, make-over and laser-hair removal. I was generously given so many incredible products that will definitely come in handy during my year as Miss Vermont and beyond. Thank you MD Cosmetic!

I've been spending a lot of time in the dance studio, cleaning up my dance. I will be heading to NYC on January 7th, to work with Shea Sullivan for the final time before Vegas! I'm looking forward to the trip, because I will get a chance to re-connect with Rachel Ann Cole, Miss Vermont 2007! I can't wait to catch up and share stories about our Miss Vermont adventures.

On December 19th, I headed over to the University Mall to help with Channel 5 News' "Toys for Kids" Program, where we had a collection site in the middle of the mall. I am always so impressed with the strong sense of community we have here in Vermont, and to see so many people donating toys was heartwarming. I don't think there are many gifts more precious than bringing a smile to a child's face, and that is exactly what this program aims to due each holiday season. Thank you for your participation!

Each day I've been working out at Poulin Performance--what an incredible facility! Such friendly trainers and a great work-out environment. Special thanks to Chris and Evita for their guidance and allowing me to use their gym.

Next week I will be driving down to South Carolina with my mom and step-dad. We will be taking advantage of our 17 hour drive, by preparing for my Miss America interview and listening to some great books on tape. I'm very thankful for my parents willingness to drive me down to SC. I will be picking up my Miss America wardrobe, and shopping for my Vegas appearance clothing. I cannot wait to see my extraordinary gown designer, Gregory Ellenburg! He has been such a wonderful friend during my year, and I'm very thankful for all of his help and support.

I have a few great appearances coming up, but I'll fill you in on those soon! I also have some pictures that I need to upload to my computer, so be on the look out for those as well.

I would love to invite you all to my send-off party! I will be showing off my wardrobe, performing my talent, and sharing the stage with other special members of the Miss Vermont family who will be performing, including Miss Vermont's Outstanding Teen, Sarah Cramton. It will be held on January 9th, 2010 at Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School in South Burlington from 2--4pm. It is open to the public so please invite your friends!

I feel incredibly blessed and humbled to be representing such a wonderful state. Vermont has given me so many things to be thankful for, and I am filled with such warmth and happiness this holiday season because of you all. Thank you for your support and for believing in me.

Hi Friends!

I just wanted to write-in to say hello and wish you all wonderful week! I am about to experience one of the busiest weeks as a student--most of these updates show how busy I've been as Miss Vermont--but this one will give you a little glimpse into my life as Laura Hall--college senior.

Tomorrow I have to wrap up my student government work for the semester--I have to send out the minutes from tonight's meeting to our campus community, and I have to have winter student-leader training set up so that everything will fall into place smoothly when I am away in Vegas and beyond! My Student Government friends have been telling me that they'll miss me when I'm Miss America--(nothing wrong with positive thinking, right?)--but they are an amazing group of individuals and I know that they will continue to led our school in a positive direction.

On Tuesday I have a 10-page paper and a group project due--I start class at 10 am and usually get out of class around 4pm. Later that evening I will drive down to Framingham, MA to work with my trainer, Katie Boyd! www.missfitco.com

On Wednesday I have a 5 page paper due. I have a meeting with my academic dean to handle my minimum of two-weeks absence from 2nd semester courses, then I will be having dinner with the President of Assumption College.

Thursday is study day--the day before exams begin. I have arranged with my professors to have all of my exams earlier so my plan is to jam-pack all of my exams in to Thursday and Friday so that I can drive home and dedicate all of my energy 110% to Miss Vermont/Miss America work!

On Friday morning I have a meeting with the Board of Trustees of Assumption College (this is part of my work as Senate Speaker for SGA) and in the late afternoon I will be in the recording to studio in Vermont, where my Miss America music track is being recorded by local musicians. I am very excited to see this process unfold! Thanks to Brian McCarthy for arranging the music, musicians and studio time!

I am trying to confirm that I am able to hold a fundraiser for CMN--so more details when I receive that confirmation. How the West was Fun!

Hi Friends,

I'm writing to you from my on-campus apartment, as my roommate unpacks and holiday music is blasting through our paper-thin walls...gotta love college. We all have just returned from our Thanksgiving Break, and what a wonderful weekend I had out in Seattle, Washington!

My Aunt Jenn and Uncle Pat moved out to Seattle in the early '90s. I have never been out there to visit their home, but what better time than as I'm preparing to become Miss America to travel across the country for the first time? I flew from coast to coast, adjusted to the time change, and am now working on re-adjusting to our Eastern time zone. It's almost 1 am here, yet I am not quite tired enough to retire for the night. I'm not sure what my roommate's excuse is for staying awake!

Before I dive into my most recent adventure, I just have to say that airports fascinate me. They really do. The fact that you can see so many people from all over the world, with completely different life stories, in one building in one moment...and then possibly, or rather, most likely never see them again. It's intriguing huh? I love seeing faces--and the many expressions that can be seen in the airport. Perhaps I'm being bizarre, but I enjoy airports.

On Wednesday morning, my dad dropped me off at the Logan Airport in Boston where I had a quick flight to Washington, DC. I found my gate right away (my mom gets nervous when I travel alone and always makes sure I call her right when I find the gate) and luckily had some time to grab a bite to eat before my 6 hour flight to Seattle. I have never been in a plane for 6 hours, and before I even boarded the plane, I found myself looking through my bags to find ways to entertain myself. I brought a book to read, one of my current event magazines, a notebook to write down my ideas (I brainstorm A LOT) and headphones to listen to music on the plane or watch whatever movie the plane provided for entertainment. However, to my surprise, I found that I did not need these items to keep my entertained. For 6 hours, I had a blast talking to my new friends Swen and Isaac, who I happened to be seated next too... somehow I always get the middle seat in the plane. My plane companions were both college-aged students, one from PA, and one who is from Seattle but goes to school in RI...both on their way to visit family for Thanksgiving. Somehow the plane ride flew by (no pun intended) as we shared stories and looked at photos and movies saved on Isaac's computer. You can meet interesting people any where you go, as long as you're willing to open up and reach out. Little did I know that my simple question of "would you like some gum?"--would turn into a fun conversation that lasted for hours. It's great that I now have two more people from different areas of our country supporting me as I work towards becoming Miss America 2010.

I have never been to the west coast (I'll probably mention this over and over), and it was really a big deal for me. When I think of the west coast, I think of Hollywood, Glamour, Movie Stars, Fashion, Sunshine, Surfing. I guess I never really picture normal, every day life. Well, now that I read what I just wrote, I guess that I associate the west with my vision of "Los Angeles"--but nonetheless, the west coast has always been as place I wanted to travel to and explore. I remember when I was younger I would write letters to my favorite stars--John Travolta, Mary-Kate and Ashley...anyone who I thought would read my letter and want to star with me in a movie. I had an urge to be famous. An urge to be known all over the world. I would dream of being famous on a daily basis. At a young age, I realized how those who were famous had a great influence on "us common people," and I wanted to use my fame to help others. I thought I had to be famous in order to make a difference. It's funny to read through my old diaries, as I read about how I wanted to be an actress, singer, dancer, writer...I would write musicals, plays, movies, songs. I would create dances. I would recruit my friends and neighbors to learn my songs and dances, and would knock on all the doors in the neighborhood to have my neighbors watch our performances in my front yard. I will never forget recording one of my songs with my class in the 2nd grade, or how I wrote an application to be a contestant on "The Mole" at age 13. I'm pretty sure the minimum age requirement was 21. I've always had big dreams and big goals, and for many years, all of those dreams could be found out in the West. Luckily, I've learned you don't need to be famous to make a difference. But, back to the story: It was great to start my exploration with Seattle, a truly wonderful city.

My first night in the "emerald city," I went to my aunt's home and met with my makeup artist who will be joining me in Vegas. We went upstairs to practice my look, and I had a blast learning some techniques. I have never been skills in the hair/make-up department, but I've enjoyed learning along the way. I went out to dinner with some of my Aunt and Uncle's friends, and then we went to a club that my uncle was taking photos at for a charity event. It was a great evening, except for my exhaustion from a day of traveling and not being use to the 3-hour time difference. Too bad I don't drink coffee!

Thanksgiving day was one of the most relaxing days I've had since being crowned Miss Vermont. I slept in, which for me, sleeping until 9am is sleeping in, and then I spent the majority of the day reading. I read Sam Haskell's "Promises I Made My Mother"--a wonderful quick read, and then began reading "The Lovely Bones"--which I'm 3/4 finished. I can't remember the last time I've had time to read a non-school related book. It was glorious.

Thanksgiving Dinner was delicious! I sent text messages to many of my lovely Miss America Sisters and enjoyed hearing how we all threw our Miss America diet out the window for this feast. Although, I don't think I call my training a "diet"-- since I still eat the majority of my favorite foods, including chocolate! Yum.

Friday was filled with shopping with my Aunt Jenn...we walked all over the place and I ended up buying three items that I love and will take with me to Vegas. I also got to see the original Starbucks! Although it was Black Friday, we did not seem to be stuck in a crowd until 5pm at night....when a Tree Lighting Ceremony began. Seattle sure loves their Christmas Lights--I don't blame them. Their streets were beautifully decorated and reminded me of Church Street. In fact, there are a lot of similarities between Seattle and Burlington, VT. I felt comfortable in this city right away. My aunt and I had to fight through the crowd like a fish swimming upstream, in order to get to the car. Right after our shopping mission I met with my hair-dresser for Miss America and discussed different styling ideas. I'm so thankful to have this team helping me present the best Laura Hall while in Vegas.

Saturday morning arrived far too soon...but, I did have something to look forward to when I arrived at the airport. Miss Washington came to greet me! Devanni and I exchanged numbers while in Orlando this August, and I'm glad she was available while I was in town! We met at the Starbucks in the airport...very appropriate, right?! (Starbucks began in Seattle)

I had an incredible trip...and I am just thankful for all of the opportunities that I have been having this year.

Hi Friends!

I have decided to take a break from working on my "quest for justice" paper for my political science class so that I can share with you the incredible week I just had! If I could get graded on my procrastination, I know I would have an A+! But, no worries, everything always get completed...maybe my professor will grade me on this blog instead. What do you think Professor Sorenson?!

Well, because I do have a bit of homework tonight, I will make this blog brief. Or at least try.

Last Monday, my dad and I traveled to Framingham, MA to work with personal trainer, Katie Boyd. Katie is a former pageant gal, and has recently become a wonderful sponsor for me. Check out her website! www.missfitco.com. Katie is also the personal trainer for my friend Nydelis, who recently won Miss Vermont USA. It's exciting to have her helping the Vermont titleholders get in great shape!

On Wednesday, my dad served as my traveling companion, as we took the 3 hour drive up to Manchester, VT. (My dad lives only 15 minutes from where I attend college, so he's been a wonderful help getting me up to Vermont every week. Thanks Dad! I love you.) I was honored to be asked to model in a charity fashion show which was raising funds for dance scholarships for the Manchester Ballet. Dance has been an important part of my life, and I know how expensive training can be. I am thankful for my parents for supporting my love of dance, and I was so happy to be involved in a fundraiser that will allow other young women be able to afford dance lessons. Manchester is filled with so many incredible designer stores! Every single outfit I wore in the fashion show, I loved! I wish I could have brought all of the clothes home...I'm still considering driving to Manchester to purchase some of the outfits. I wore clothing from many stores, including: Ann Taylor, Theory, Tsi, Kenneth Cole, BCBG, Robin Lane, and more! It was a great event, and I had the opportunity to meet Claudia Voight, mother of Miss CT 2006 Heidi Voight, who is going to be the co-director for the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization! She's wonderful. I may be jumping ahead, but Sue Lackey, who has been my interim director since September, officially sent in the paperwork to become Executive Director. We should be hearing from Nationals soon. Sue has been building an extraordinary board! If approved, she and Claudia will be teaming up to make our state program stronger than ever. I am thankful for their help, love and support.

On Friday, I drove home to Burlington, VT, and mentally prepared for a busy, busy Saturday!

My Saturday morning began with a mock interview in Essex, Vermont. I had an amazing panel who gave me wonderful feedback. Interview is my favorite portion of the competition, and each week I can see my improvement. I am so excited for my Miss America interview! January is coming so soon! I cannot wait!

After my mock interview, my mom and I rushed over to the Double Tree Hotel where the Festival of Sweets was taking place. Now, this was my type of appearance! haha, being surrounded in a room filled with cakes, cookies and chocolate! Yum! Free samples...talk about a belly ache! (so worth it!) I had the privilege of being a celebrity judge for the cake decorating contest. Students from the New England Culinary Institute creating wedding cakes, and novelty cakes based on Christmas songs. I was blown away by the talent that these students had. I felt like I was on one of those shows seen on the Food Network! It was so hard to judge. After scoring the cakes, I was asked to present the awards. My favorite cake, which was a light blue convertible with Santa driving, won.

After the cake contest, Mom and I filled out some paperwork at my Nonni's house, and then headed over to meet with Brian McCarthy. Brian has been kind enough to rearrange my talent music for Miss America. He is organizing a local band to record the music--this is a huge relief, as recording can be expensive! I'm excited to have Vermonters performing my talent song!

Later that evening I attended "On Stage with Heart" which was a charity event for the American Heart Association. I was asked to speak about my family's experience with heart issues, and I performed my self-choreographed dance to "Almost like being in love." It was such a fun evening, filled with incredible talent! The highlight of the evening was running into my childhood dance teacher, Angie Nulty! Angie is allowing me to have a key to her studio so I can go in and practice my routine any time I need! She is so generous and I am so glad to have her back in my life!

Sunday morning, my dad, brother and I drove the 4 hours back to Massachusetts. I had to leave Vermont earlier than usual because I was asked to speak with the Assumption College Alumni Board. It's hard to believe that this May, I will be able to join the Alumni Council, as I graduate in May. I met with my advisor, and I found out that I already have enough credits to graduate this May...I keep picturing myself receiving my diploma as Miss America. What a great news story that would be! Especially since education is such a valued component of our organization. I've been working hard Vermont, I'm hoping this is our year. The Alumni Board was a great opportunity to practice my interview skills--I was asked a variety of questions, and had a great time meeting new friends.

Well, I should be getting back to my homework! I have 3 classes tomorrow, and then I'm off to Seattle, Washington! I have never been west of Ohio, I am so excited! I will be staying with my Aunt and Uncle, as I meet with my hair and makeup artist for Miss America. I can't wait to update you all on that trip.

This year has been an incredible adventure. I am so thankful for each and every opportunity.

Miss Vermont in South Carolina!

On Friday, November 6th--my mom and Nonni flew from Burlington International Airport and arrived in Charlotte, NC by 3:30pm. It was the first time I ever flew in a plane with my mom, as well as the first time with my Nonni, so it was great to have a mini vacation with these very important women in my life.

We rented a car and drove to Greenville, South Carolina, where the shop of my wonderful gown designer is located. It was a fun drive since we saw so many billboards (a big difference from our state, which has no billboard signs), and we experienced a lovely 4-lane highway--it was just a little scary! haha. Even though I attend college in a good-sized city, I couldn't get over the amount of tractor-trailers on the road. We were sandwiched between so many trucks carrying loads of who-knows-what, but we survived! We had Mable, who came in very handy (sometimes). When I won the title of Miss Vermont, Ashley Wheeler's (Miss VT '08) family donated a GPS for me to use during the year. If you know me well, you know that I like to give names to random objects, so collectively, my family decided on the name "Mable" for our GPS. Mable was helpful with most of the directions, but sometimes I think she liked to get us lost for fun. At least Greenville was a fun city to get lost in!

As soon as we reached our hotel, we unpacked and rushed over to the Overlook Grille, to meet up with Kelly Sloan, Miss South Carolina, and her mother. We enjoyed a delicious meal and had a great time catching up on what we've been up to since we first met in August at MAOTeen in Orlando. I have enjoyed staying in touch with many of the incredible women I met at MAOTeen, and I look forward to seeing them all in Las Vegas! It's coming soon!

As soon as we finished dinner, Mom, Nonni and I headed back to the hotel to get some rest; but first we watched the new episode of "King of the Crown." This show is a hoot--it airs on TLC, and it is actually based in Columbia, SC--a city that I had the opportunity to visit (keep reading). I was hoping to run into Cyrus during my visit, but our paths did not cross. Maybe next time!

Saturday morning was the day that I had been waiting for! Miss America Wardrobe fitting!! One of the best experiences during my year as Miss Vermont was meeting Gregory Ellenburg while at Miss America's Outstanding Teen in Orlando, Florida. I was at a tradeshow looking at all of the beautiful items from various vendors, when I ended up stopping at Greg's table. Since Vermont is not a pageant state, I learned a lot at this tradeshow about various designers that specialize in pageant gowns. I was not aware of who many of these designers were, so when I was talking with a friendly man at the Gregory Ellenburg table, I did not realize that I was talking to The Gregory Ellenburg! I ended up having a great conversation with Greg (without realizing who he was), which turned into an incredible friendship. Greg offered to help me with my Miss America wardrobe, which was a huge blessing for me! I have heard horror stories of contestants going into the debt over their Miss America wardrobe. I've always dreamed of having a gorgeous wardrobe for the national competition, but when I was crowned Miss Vermont, one of my first thoughts was how I was going to raise the funds to have my dream wardrobe. Many of you know that the Miss Vermont Organization has been going through a transition this year, and with this transition, there has been a limited amount of funds available to support Miss Vermont's expenses. I'm proud to say that our state is in the process of getting a wonderful board put together, so hopefully future Miss Vermonts will have more money to access through our organization. I've been so fortunate to have many wonderful supporters throughout our state, and the generosity and kindness from community members has been simply extraordinary. But, the expenses involved in competing for Miss America can add up quickly, and being a woman who truly benefits from the scholarships that the Miss America Organization provides, finances have constantly been on my mind. I wore a $120 gown at Miss Vermont, and I have always been a bargain shopper. But with this once-in-a-lifetime experience, I wanted to find a way to not focus on the money and clearance shopping, and make sure that I found a wardrobe that I was absolutely in love with. I 100% believe in the power of positive thinking, and I believe that my positive mindset was what helped lead me to meeting Gregory.

It was great to reunite with Gregory after meeting him several months before. We have talked on the phone several times, and he really let me put my input into his designs. I fell in love the sketches of my wardrobe, and Gregory did a wonderful job of incorporating my personality into his designs. The first outfit I tried on was my talent costume. I thought it was beautiful when I first put it on, but I did not realize that I was only wearing the shell of the costume. All of the sudden, Gregory magically assembled a costume in front of my eyes, and I starred in the mirror with amazement as he kept making my costume even more incredible with each stage of the fitting process. I love it! I think you all will love it as well!

The gown is something that I've been dreaming about since I first saw the rough sketches. When I first put on this gown, I could feel the tears form in my eyes. It's perfect. It really is the perfect gown for me. When I turned around to show my mom, the look in her eyes solidified my feelings about this gown. It's stunning. It's unique. It's completely me. I have never felt more beautiful in a gown than when I tried this gown on...and it's not even 100% complete! Ahh I get goosebumps. Gregory Ellenburg is so talented. I know that many contestants try not to reveal who they are working with until closer to the pageant, but I am too excited to not share. You all can have a preview of my gown at my send off party on January 9th.

After the first fitting with Greg, I headed over to Identity Salon in Greenville to work with Susan Grant. Susan is a fantastic hair and makeup artist and has been a supporter of the Miss America Organization for years. Susan gave me some wonderful advice and tips, and styled my hair and makeup for an appearance later that evening.

On Saturday night, I had the honor of attending a preliminary competition for the Miss South Carolina Pageant--Miss River City. The pageant was in Columbia, South Carolina, which was about an hour and a half away from Greenville. My mom, Nonni and I attended the pageant with Gregory and Jonathan who works with Gregory. The ride to and from the pageant was just non-stop laughter! It was a great ab workout for me. This was the first year for Miss River City, and I was very impressed with the production and the quality of the contestants. It was a very entertaining evening, and it was fun to sit and watch, although, part of me wished I could run up on stage with all of the girls! It was a great evening!

Sunday was another fun-filled day, as I spent the afternoon with Amber Finley (a former Miss South Carolina 1st-runner-up) and Taylor Fitch (Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2009). These ladies were so kind and down-to-earth, and gave me some great advice which will travel with me to Miss America. I really appreciate their friendship and I hope to reunite with them when I return to South Carolina before Miss America!

After meeting with Amber and Taylor, my family and I went into a couple stores and then headed back to Greenville to go out to dinner with Gregory. We decided to have some "cheat food" so I had a delicious BBQ Chicken meal with french fries! Hey, I was on vacation, right?!

Monday morning came far too soon. With one last stop to Greg's shop, I was sad to have to say goodbye! This weekend was jam-packed with great memories and I left South Carolina with an extra boost of confidence. There is a lot that I need to still accomplish before January, but I know that everything will turn out the way it is suppose to. I'm staying positive!

I cannot wait to head back to Greenville to see the final product! Thanks again Greg for your guidance and friendship! You are one of a kind!

Talking Tuesday---a day filled with speaking engagements

Hello Vermont!

Since my last blog was way too long, I have decided to break up my last week into several blog entries. I'm writing this before I even begin to type so that I remind myself that I cannot keep writing and writing and writing--although, I have so much to share. I'm very anxious to tell you about my incredible trip to South Carolina, but I think I'll start by going backwards and sharing yesterday's activities with you.

My mom, Nonni and I landed in Burlington International Airport around 10:30pm on Monday night--but it was close to Midnight by the time I arrived to our home in Vergennes and unpacked. Although I could tell my body was exhausted from all of our traveling, for some reason, I just could not sleep. Two hours later, I attempted to go to sleep, only to wake to the beautiful sound of my cell-phone alarm at 6am. I'm estimating that I had a solid 4 hours of sleep.

6am sharp, my jam-packed, fun-filled day began! I arrived at Nonni's house around 7:30 am, where she had me try on some appearance clothing that she altered for me. My Nonni wears many hats: Grandmother, Traveling Companion, To-Do List Maker, and seamstress (along with many other roles). I am so thankful for all of the help my Nonni has given me this year--being Miss Vermont would not be as enjoyable or smooth-sailing without her!

I spent the majority of the day at Chamberlin School--an elementary school in South Burlington. This was the first school that I've had to opportunity to visit as Miss Vermont, and this appearance was very special to me, as this was where I attended elementary school. It was so nice to return to the familiar and friendly hallways, where I had the chance to reunite with formers teachers. Mr. Bose, who was my gym teacher, presented me with a photo that he had of me and some of my friends when we were in first grade! It was so precious. I absolutely love Chamberlin School, and I as very impressed with the students I spoke with yesterday.

The school arranged for me to speak with each individual grade, kindergarten--5th grade. I love that my platform can be relevant to any age group, so I had fun spreading different messages to each of the grades. I'd like to share some highlights from my school visit:

*While speaking with the Kindergartners, I began by asking what each student wanted to be when they grew up. My plan was to take the occupations they gave me, and show them how they can start working towards this goal today by being a kind, respectful, and helpful student. As a sea of arms waved in the air, I heard students list out jobs such as a doctor, a teacher, a vet, a firefighter, a baker, and then all of the sudden, I heard the sweet voice of a young girl: "I want to be the tooth fairy!" That would be a great job, wouldn't it? She would probably get some great frequent-flyer miles with all that traveling!

The first grade I spoke with was 4th grade. The only teacher that I had at Chamberlin who still teaches at Chamberlin School is Mrs. Tan. It was great to be able to speak to her grade-level first. Towards the end of my presentation, I offer to answer any questions that the students may have. One of the funny questions that I was asked was, "how does your crown stay on"--my response: glue. But then of course, I tilted my head forward to reveal the real secret of how the crown stays on my head.

I was at Chamberlin School for 4 hours, but I wish I had more time! It was just an amazing day, and I really felt like the students gained something from my messages. I was impressed by the quality of their questions and their curiosity to know how they can currently make changes and make an impact at their school and in their community. I left this appearance feeling inspired and determined to book many more school appearances throughout the state. I finished around 2:30pm and had about 2 1/2 hours to spare before my next appearance. My lack of sleep the night before was catching up with me so I took a nap, and then wrote down my talking points for my next speech.

I was invited to be the Key Note Speaker for a charity fashion show that the Mary-Kay Foundation of Vermont had put together. I was asked to speak about my experience as Miss Vermont and I was also able to speak about women empowerment and goal setting. All of the women were so kind, and it was great to see some of the current fashion trends being modeled. My mom was able to come to this appearance with me, and it was great to share the experience with her. I was able to do some great networking at this event, and it was nice to meet so many women who said that they will be watching Miss America Live! on January 30th! It is always rewarding when you can speak to a group who knows little about the Miss America Organization, and then during the speech, open their eyes up to the incredible work this organization does. We definitely have some more supporters of the Miss Vermont/Miss America Organization!

It's currently Wednesday afternoon, and I have yet to leave my house. I've been catching up on e-mails and making lots of phone calls--all Miss Vermont duties!

It's already November?!

Hello Friends,

I cannot believe how quickly the time has been flying by! Miss America is right around the corner--there is so much to do, but I'm so ready for the time of my life! Miss America is the icing on the cake of an incredible year (and after the competition, I will be eating that cake!) My roommates love to bake cookies, brownies and all things delicious. I have strong willpower 50% of the time. But now that November is here, I'll try to minimize my intake on chocolate. Maybe.

Preparing for Miss America has been an amazing experience for me. I'm always asked about what the preparation process is like, and I think I disappoint people when I say that I just work on being the best Laura Hall that I can be. Perhaps that answer isn't as glamorous as expected, but there are a lot of aspects of pageantry that the general public does not know about--simply because you learn so much by actually going through the process.

Before I was crowned Miss Vermont, I had a notebook filled with writings that I titled the "Miss Vermont Plan of Action." Going into the competition, I had really thought about what I wanted to do with the title and how I would go about achieving it. I created dozens of to-do lists before I was even honored with the title, but because I spent so much time planning for my year, I already put myself in the mindset of being Miss Vermont.

Some of you may know that before I won the title of Miss Vermont, I competed in Massachusetts. In January of 2008, I decided to enter a local pageant in the city I attend college in hopes of gaining some experience with the Miss America Organization. I always knew that I would compete for Miss Vermont, and I had intended to compete in 2008. However, I won the local in Massachusetts and before I knew it, I was Miss Worcester County 2008 and off to compete for the title of Miss Massachusetts.

When I think about my experience at Miss Massachusetts and Miss Vermont, I shake my head in amazement at how differently I prepared for both competitions. For Miss Mass, I focused on the pageant itself. I tried to memorize interview answers to potential questions. I watched dozens of youtube clips to copy how other pageant girls walked. I tried to make an interesting talent routine by combining hip-hop with tap (a style I was not use to), and worst of all, I wore a pantsuit in interview. Nothing against pantsuits, but for me, that style is not my own. I focused far too much on being liked by the judges, that I forgot to focus on the aspects that I love about myself. I didn't let my true personality show. I covered up my goofy, dorky, energetic and sweet side by wearing clothing that I thought the judges would like to see, by performing a talent that I thought would impress the judges, and by attempting to always give the perfect answer. When I think about to June 2008, I laugh at how stiff and un-relatable I must have come across. I focused so much on the judges, that I did not focus on myself. I came to this realization quite quickly after the pageant ended. I was a non-finalist at Miss Massachusetts, but the knowledge I gained about myself was what was able to put me in the right mindset for Miss Vermont 2009. My journey at Miss Massachusetts really gave me a wealth of useful knowledge and I'm so grateful for the experience and the people I met. It was also nice to already be friends with one of my current Miss America sisters.

At Miss Vermont 2009, I felt completely calm and relaxed throughout the entire pageant weekend. I was able to really enjoy the experience and had the privilege of really getting to know the amazing girls that were also participating in Miss Vermont. I made friendships, I had fun and I never once felt like I was in a competition. It was a blast! I remember when I was at my first MAO state pageant in 2008, I felt overwhelmed and out of place. I focused on the things that I didn't know and the things that were out of my control. I psyched myself out because I learned that other girls had pageant coaches (I didn't know they existed), I psyched myself because I did not have a local director to help guide me along the process, and I psyched myself out because I had no knowledge of certain pageant secrets such as butt glue (haha I still do not use the product) or spanx. I let the things that I didn't have overshadow the things that I did have. At Miss Vermont, I focused on who I am, and what I am capable of. I focused on my potential to do great things and my passion for the Miss America Organization. It felt natural and enjoyable...and that has been what my Miss America preparations have been like as well!

For Miss America there are 5 phases of competition: interview, on-stage question, swimsuit, evening gown and talent. And while I have been doing a lot of various tasks to prepare for each individual competition--I have been focusing much more on the job of Miss America, and I have been incorporating Miss America into my every day life.

I am a college senior. I am a student leader. I am Miss Vermont. But most of all, I am Laura Hall. This year has been filled with lessons in flexibility and open-mindedness. I have relied on others more than I usually like to, but I've learned that that is not a bad thing. I have been sharing my year with so many wonderful people who have been reaching out and supporting me in more ways that I can count. I have learned a valuable distinction: I am not capable of everything, but I am capable of anything. I'm blessed to have so many people alongside me who help me achieve my "anything."

As a college student I tune in my inner Miss America by engaging in classroom discussions and focusing on getting a strong education. I have been speaking one-on-one with professors of all different disciplines as a way to surround myself with all various opinions on current events. I have also been thankful for the many professors who have sat in on mock interview sessions to help me present the best Laura Hall that I can be. I have enjoyed fielding diverse questions--and I have become strong at communicating my ideas because of all of the help I've received from the Assumption College community.

As the Senate Speaker for the Student Government Organization, I find myself exercising my leadership skills on a daily basis. I work on being a role model and a spokesperson for the student body which is a smaller-scale of exactly what I will be doing as Miss America. Because I currently am a college student as I prepare for Miss America, I am able to stay relevant to the college-aged demographic, which is one of our main target audiences for the Miss America Organization since all contestants are between the ages of 17--24. If I can balance all of these responsibilities, it is my hope that others will see that they too can do the same. I recently spoke with a college professor who was involved with pageants when she was in college but she had to quit after she found out how time-consuming it was. While it is time-consuming, I focus on how rewarding and enjoyable every experience I partake in is.

I am in Vermont every week (although I did just stay in Massachusetts for a solid 2 weeks--explanation coming up soon), and when I'm home I have a jam-packed schedule as I try to promote our organization at as many events as possible. While I'm at school, I continue to focus on my work as Miss Vermont as I schedule appearances, communicate with sponsors and plan up-coming events such as my send-off party on January 9th in South Burlington (save the date--more info to come soon!). I work on my platform and my non-profit organization that has extended from my platform.

Being on a tight schedule has taught me that I am more than capable of being Miss America. I have been balancing many different roles, but each role helps tie into the well-roundedness (is that a word?) and flexibility that Miss America needs to possess. I have always been a go-go-go type of gal, and one of the biggest shocks is that I have yet to become a coffee-drinker this year. I'm running on a natural high with my natural energy! I am so excited for the opportunity to be Miss America, and I'm working hard to shine as Miss America every single day, in everything that I do.

Wow--that came out much longer than I expected. In case you got lost in the jumble of words, I suppose my main point is that in order to prepare for Miss America, I have been focusing on how I can use my God-given abilities to be the best Laura Hall that I can be. Maybe I should have just wrote that to begin with.

Well Vermont, it's been awhile since I've updated on my adventures! I will try to keep the update brief as I fear your eyes will soon start to hurt from staring at the computer screen. Thank you for hanging in there!

On October 17th I attended the Assumption College President's Council Dinner for the alumni who have donated over $1,000 to our school. As an executive of the SGA, I was invited to attend along with my 4 other executive buddies. The dinner was wonderful and was a great networking opportunity. I had to be quick on my feet to communicate with people who I had never met, but ended up leaving with some new friends in my life. Assumption College's President, Dr. Cesareo, surprised me during his speech when he acknowledged my title of Miss Vermont to the entire dinner party. All of the sudden a spotlight shown on my face, and I was asked to stand up, where I received a very generous congratulatory applause from the Assumption alumni. It was very humbling, and I cannot thank Assumption College enough for their support!

On October 24th, I met with Alaina Mangano from Elite Dance Academy in Shrewsbury Mass to work on my Miss America talent. Alaina is the sister of Lauren Mangano who is the new local director for the Miss Worcester County Pageant--the title I held in 2008. It's wonderful to have the support from Massachusetts, and it's a testament of how the Miss America Organization is different from other pageant systems. Our volunteers support all contestants, which I truly appreciate as I balance my time between MA and VT. Alaina is such a talented dancer and has been amazing at helping me perfect my dance.

October 25th was a day filled with community service. The morning began by setting up a Halloween party for disadvantaged youth in Worcester. This event was sponsored by ODK--Omicron Kappa Delta, which is a national honor society that I am a member of. I had a blast playing Halloween-related games with all the children. I love every opportunity I have to work with youth. The event last for a couple of hours, and then I moved on to the next event...

Later that afternoon I helped execute the 10th annual Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at Assumption College. This is why I was absent from Vermont for two weekends in a row. The Student Government runs this event every year, and I'm proud to announce that we raised over $140,000 and counting at this event. It was such a beautiful walk, as each walker held a glowing balloon that filled the sky like lightning bugs and shooting stars. Beautiful. Powerful. Inspirational.

This past Thursday, October 29th, I drove back to Vermont after my 2:30 class ended, and boy was I glad to be home! There is no better air to breathe than Vermont air! It tickles the nostrils as my friend Erica would say! haha.

Friday, October 30th was a busy day with an early start. I was out the door by 7 am to drive to South Burlington to get to my Nonni's house. Nonni, as always, was my wonderful traveling companion. The day started with some beauty appointments (in other words, I got my eyebrows waxed and a spray tan) and then I went to meet with Kim DeBrul. Kim is a wonderful leader in the Vermont community and has volunteered to time to be my motivational coach as I prepare for the ultimate job. Kim is helping me reinforce the importance of a positive mindset, and has been helping me to visualize my goal. She and I have very similar ways of thinking and it's nice to have her to help keep me on the right track.

Vermont, I have a confession. I had a cheeseburger from Al's French Frys for lunch that day, and it was so good that I do not regret it! Al's is my absolute favorite restaurant and although it's not the best for a swimsuit figure...one cheeseburger now and then doesn't hurt. Right? Please say right. I also had some of their delicious french fries too. Yum.

After lunch Nonni and I went shopping at the University Mall, which just conveniently happened to be the location of my appearance for the night. I was invited to help out with the Night Before Halloween Mall Party, where an estimated 2,000 kids got to play games and trick-or-treat in the mall throughout the night. I was in charge of running the Spooky Bingo game which was a blast! I love playing bingo, and it was fun to be the announcer for the game.

While at the UMall, I met one of my mom's high school friends who generously gave a donation to support my year as Miss Vermont. It was wonderful to thank him in person. Being a young woman who truly benefits from the scholarships I receive, this donation was a huge relief for me--being Miss Vermont can be pricey at times. Thank you Dan for your support!

Saturday, October 31st (aka Halloween) was an extremely busy day! I got up early to go to the Red Clover Salon to get my hair done for my photoshoot with Wayne Tarr. Mary did an incredible job on my hair, but unfortunately it was so windy out outside, that by the time I reached the photographer, my hair had taken on a new style. Ohwell, it still looked pretty decent if I do say so myself! For the next 5 hours I had a blast working with Wayne and Sarah Cramton for our holiday photoshoot. It was funny dressing in Christmas-y apparel on Halloween. But I love being in the Christmas Spirit so the photo shoot was so much fun, but definitely exhausting. I cannot wait to see the results!

After the photoshoot my mom and I treated ourselves to dinner and then headed back to Nonni's house to sort through some home videos. TLC has asked each contestant to provide a home video of us performing our talent as a child. We ended up choosing a video from a dance recital in 1996, and we could not stop laughing at how I looked back then. Let's just say there is a reason why my mom calls me Laura Monkey. Thank goodness for braces!

I headed back to school yesterday, and immediately hit the gym and then filled some office hours in the SGA office. I have to have a minimum of 10 office hours a week so I try to fit them in whenever possible--even if it is a Sunday afternoon. We had a very productive meeting last night, and I'm proud to be a part of an organization that is so passionate about representing the student body.

Today was also very busy, but very productive! I sent out over 20 e-mails, I'm almost caught up on everything! I worked on my dance, and I had my good friend Tommy Sleeper edit my home-video which is now ready to be sent in. And, I'm now working on the World Record for longest blog entry ever!

I'm sorry for the delay in communication! I will try to stay on top of it better! It's been a busy year, but every day has been memorable and different! What a year!!

Hello Vermont!

The Go Green Movement has always been of importance in our state, and this past August while I was in Orlando, I had the opportunity to share different ways that I go green on the "Green With Tamara" show. All of the Miss America contestants shared how they go green, and now America gets to vote for their favorite contestants. I would greatly appreciate your vote! The Green Mountain State has really been a pioneer in the Go Green Movement in the US, so I definitely think our state deserves to win this contest!

Vermont is filled with sweetness!

Part 2 of my catch-up blog!

On October 2nd, I drove the 4-hour commute to Vermont from Assumption College, with only minutes to get ready before my appearance for the night. Throwing some hot-rollers in my hair, (thanks to my step-dad who plugged them in for me so they were hot when I walked into my house) I scrambled to get ready for the 5hour event. With only 5 minutes to get ready for 5 hours, I think I did ok. But hey, time is money, and as I volunteered my time at the Casino Night benefiting the Epilepsy Association, I witnessed a great deal of money being raised for this wonderful organization! From 7pm until Midnight, My step-dad Mike and I volunteered at the Elks Club where the Casino Night took place. Mike and I were asked to be Black Jack dealers, but because I've never been a gambler, I figured that I would be of much better use spinning the big wheel, rather than trying to learn how to be a Black Jack dealer in a short amount of time. Mike has a great deal experience with Black Jack (I hope he wins big while in Vegas for Miss America) and he alone was able to raise over $500. There were about 12 Black Jack dealers, along with a Roulette Table and Texas Hold'em tables, so although I don't know what the final tally was for the evening, I'm certain that the Epilepsy Association made a great deal of money for their cause! It was such a fun evening, and the time really flew by! I really enjoyed my task, it reminded me of the Price Is Right--one of my favorite shows!--and each time I spun the big wheel, I pretended I was playing in the Showcase Showdown! Lame? Ok...I'll give you that, but I had a blast! The people were so fun to mingle with, and there was a great turn out! Since the closest casino is in Montreal, a lot of people attended the Casino Night, and I think because this event raised money for charity, it gave us Vermonters all the more reasons to come out and gamble! Win or Lose it was a win/win situation. A few members of the Middlebury College Rugby Team came out to volunteer and before they left we took a picture together! What nice guys! Overall, the entire event was a great success! Before I left, the Epilepsy Association asked if I could participate in their next big event in April. The Penguin Plunge! I agreed. I will be jumping into Lake Champlain in April where there is still always snow on the ground! I'm excited, and I already get goosebumps at the thought of my feet jumping into that ice cold water.

On October 5th, I participated in the Miss America Lottery. I had to go back to Assumption College, so I was in Massachusetts while I was picking my lottery number, but I had a slew of supporters watching the lottery and helping me figure out which competition group I should be in. I was on the phone with either my mom or Nonni almost every 4 minutes. Each time a new contestant's name popped on the screen I'd get a phone call telling me "I'm sure you'll be next. I'm sure you'll be next." Well, I received at least 35 of those phone calls haha! Miss Vermont popped onto the computer screen towards the end of the lottery, and I'm really excited to say that I am VERY happy with my placement! Harry Benoit, a huge supporter of the MVSO, and I kept e-mailing throughout the process, and I'm glad that he too is happy with my group. I am in the MU group, and we joke that this group is very appropriate for our state, since MU sounds like MOO! Gregory Ellenburg gave much support during lottery with his phone calls and texts, along with many of my friends and family who were watching the lottery from their homes. My Uncle Pat and Aunt Jen did the lottery dance in Seattle, Washington. My Aunt Lisa in Cincinnati, OH was cheering for me, along with my family members in Atlanta, GA. Vermont had so much support during this process and I'm so happy with the outcome! Thank you all for your positive vibes! A special thank you to my boyfriend Mike who drove to Assumption College to sit and watch the lottery for 2 hours and then took me out for a celebratory dinner! Miss Vermont is contestant number 4 in the MU group! I feel very good about this placement...I keep seeing the number 4 everywhere! Seems like a good sign to me!

So, I believe I have caught you up from what has happened over the last couple of weeks. Other exciting news, my talent song has been approved! I just need to get the song re-recorded and we are in the process of figuring that all out. I will be dancing to "I want to go to Hollywood" from the musical, The Grand Hotel.

My Miss America Wardrobe is well-underway! I am in LOVE with my evening gown (or at least the sketches!) I will be flying down to South Carolina with my mom and Nonni in the beginning of November to try on my Evening Gown and Talent Costume on and I cannot wait. I am soo blessed to be working with Gregory Ellenburg. His work is breathtaking and he has done a fabulous job at capturing my personality into each piece of my wardrobe! I don't want to give too much information away because I want you all to be surprised!

I am currently typing my blog in my living room as I watch Miss America 2004, Ericka Dunlap, compete on The Amazing Race! The heat from the wood stove is gently kissing my cheek as my feet are freezing underneath a blanket...I know fall has officially fallen. I love Vermont in the fall! The scenery is simply beautiful as all the leaves change color. We have a beautiful view of the mountains from the backyard of our house in Vergennes, and the crispness of the air outside is so refreshing! Ahh I'm so proud to call Vermont my home!

Yesterday, Saturday the 10th (Happy 11th Anniversary Dad and Katie)--I had an appearance at my old stomping grounds--Chamberlin School! When I first moved to Vermont in the 1st grade, this is the school I attended for 5 years. So many wonderful memories and it's always fun to have a reunion with all of my teachers from back in the day! I had the privilege of participating in their Harvest Festival. I remember attending this festival when I was a student at Chamberlin, so it was so great to return as Miss Vermont. I look forward to doing several appearances at Chamberlin School throughout the year. I cannot speak highly enough about this school. I think the first few words of the school song say enough: "Chamberlin School, Chamberlin School--We think you're cool! Chamberlin School, Chamberlin School--we all love you!" Aww memories!

After the Harvest Festival, my mom and I had about an hour to spare before visiting with my Interim Director (hopefully soon to be my official Executive Director!), Sue Lackey. We went to Mimmo's in Essex, VT for some delicious pizza! It was at Mimmo's that I decided I would start collecting these super cute sugar packets. I have set a maximum limit of 3 sugar packets from each restaurant that carries them...I don't want seem like a crazy, sugar-stealing lady, so three seems like a good amount without crossing the line. Right? Well--why do I want to collect these I LOVERMONT sugar packets? Easy--because Vermont is filled with sweetness and I want to spread that sweetness around! Maybe this is weird, but I think it's cool--every time I travel somewhere out of Vermont, I want to randomly leave a ILOVERMONT sugar packet. I will be traveling to more states this year than I have in my entire life, so why not leave a little piece of our sweet state everywhere I go? haha! So be on the look-out when you travel away from Vermont--you may come across one of my sugar packets.

Meeting with Sue was great! We are on the same page for my vision of my reign and I'm so glad to have her support and guidance. She has great vision for this organization, and together, I hope we can build it up to be stronger than ever! With everything I do, I try to leave something better than when I began--and with this transitional year in terms of the leadership of our program, I believe that I can help build relationships and connections that strengthen this program for years to come. I am already 100% dedicated to this organization for the rest of my life. Miss America does amazing things for the amazing girls who participate in it. It keeps me real. I am so proud to be a Miss America girl!

It's easy for me to get off topic. Thanks for hanging in there. I visited the Red Clover after meeting with Sue and got a super-cute haircut from Mary! I loved the way my hair looked when I left the salon, however, I have yet to find a way to repeat how my hair looked yesterday. I'm trying though! Maybe tomorrow I will master the look! We'll see...

Well, I've been running around Burlington today with my mom and Nonni. We had a great shopping excursion and finished the afternoon with some interview practice. Speaking of interview, I have found out who one of my judges will be at Miss America! Rush Limbaugh, will be one of the seven judges who have the important task of choosing Miss America 2010. I am looking forward to finding out who else will be on the judging panel! I feel like January will be here before I know it.

But until then, I'm enjoying every moment and each step of the way.

Oh my goodness, Vermont! I cannot believe that two weeks have gone by since I've last blogged. I have so much to catch you all up on and right now, the only words that come to mind are "I'm sorry!" I'm sorry for the delay in my communication, so to make up for it, I'm going to make this blog a 2-part series and overflow it with photos! This will be part one, look for part two soon! Sarah Cramton and I were thrilled to be invited to take part in their annual Oktoberfest event where we got to ride in the parade, take part in the tapping of the keg (we only drank birch beer (root beer!)--no worries!), dance with children while a live band played on stage, and enjoy the moment with some wonderful Vermonters!

GREEN MOUNTAIN IRON DOG! Colchester, Vermont

After enjoying a few hours in Stowe, my family drove down to Colchester, Vermont for the Green Mountain Iron Dog Charity Event. This event will definitely be one of the most memorable of my year, not only because it raised money for charity in a unique fashion, but because my dog Tucker was more of the guest of honor than Miss Vermont was! Tucker's first appearance was a blast! We got to mingle with dozens of dogs who all competed in the rigorous Iron Dog competition. Tucker and I were asked to compete, but after taking into consideration that my dog has a hard enough time walking in a straight line, let alone running, we figured we would be much better at cheering on other dogs and their owners as they crossed the finish line! It was great to see so many animal-lovers, and I know Tucker enjoyed meeting new friends. Over 70 dogs competed, and all of the proceeds from the event went towards paying for the medical bills for retired police dogs.

What I love about being Miss Vermont is the fact that I can go from being in a parade in the morning and then switch into workout clothes to do an appearance with my dog in the afternoon! How cool is our state? I love that each day is uniquely different and exciting...and in Vermont, you never know what kind of appearance you'll be asked to attend next!

Hi Vermont!

Knowing that tomorrow is going to be a very busy and eventful day, I figured that it's time for me to catch you all up on the fun I have be having since I last blogged.

Last Friday (Septemer 18th), I arrived at the Sheraton Hotel in Framingham, Massachusetts, where I met up with Sue Lackey, to begin a long, informative and fun weekend at the New England States Conference! After settling into our hotel room, we headed downstairs for dinner with some fabulous company! Sarah Cramton and her mother, along with my sweetheart and first-runner up Caroline Bright, joined us for dinner. It was great to catch up with my fellow Vermonters, and later that night, we had some more wonderful residents of our state join us! Sonah Lee, Katie Levasseur, Jeanelle Achee (non-finalist talent award winner) and Brittany Rhodes (MVOT '05) all traveled down the Massachusetts to participate in the weekend festivities.

Saturday started bright and early, with registration beginning at 7:45 am. All of the Miss and Teen titleholders gathered together to go over a brief dinner show rehearsal and then headed right over to another room for an autograph signing. Although this was a New England States Conference, it was wonderful to see so many MAO supporters from other states travel to attend the conference. I made two friends from Ohio who are both local titleholders, I met the EDs of the Miss Philadelphia program, and a former Miss Kentucky who I really made a great connection with! I also had the opportunity to catch up with two of my Miss Vermont judges, and our emcee Dana, who gave two excellent presentations during the weekend. What I love about New England, is that all six states really have a bond. We root and cheer for each other and treat each other like the neighbors we are. When Valerie Clemens said that Miss America 2010 was attending this conference, I believe her. All of my New England Miss America sisters are wonderful representatives and role models. It was so great to spend the weekend with them!

Other highlights of the day was trying on many of Tony Bowls' beautiful gowns! (Meeting him was pretty great too!) Before dinner, all of the state titleholders walked the runway and then worked the crowd in one of his beautiful creations. The fashion show was a success, but the behind-the-scenes preparation for the show was hilarious--at least for me. I learned a very valuable lesson: always pack safety pins! Thank goodness I was able to borrow some double-sided tape, otherwise we may have had a pageant scandal on our hands. The dress I borrowed was not exactly the right size, and fit a little too loose in an area where I am not well endowed (enough said)--luckily, I was able to grab Sue's attention (the frantic flailing of my arms did the trick) and she came to my rescue! Sue has extraordinary skills with tape and she was even able to find some safety pins--which came in handy again later in the night when the Velcro that holds my sash together broke off. When the fashion show began, I was the first to hit the runway, and I felt like a star. I'm hoping that no one had a clue about the chaos that occurred backstage. Something that I'm learning to embrace is the imperfections that make each day filled with perfect memories. It's easy to feel frustrated if something doesn't fit right, or doesn't turn out the way you were envisioning--but you can't let that stop you and you can't let that hold you back. Embrace it. Laugh with it. Learn from it. Grow from it. And share these funny stories with others! (hence, why I'm sharing some silly moments in my blog--these things make me laugh and they keep me real. I'm Laura Hall and sometimes I can be a mess.)

Rick Brinkley, who has worked with the judging aspect of Miss America for years, spoke with the audience and really reinforced some important messages that I hope to keep with me while in Vegas and throughout my year as Miss Vermont. Another speaker who really inspired me was Patricia Miller--co-founder of Vera Bradley--who began her business with a $250 investment. Dream big, and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. I was so impressed with all of the guest speakers and presenters throughout the conference, but there are two people who really left an impression with me.

Sam Haskell, President of the Board, attended our conference and shared some stories from his book "Promises I made my Mother." Sam was so interesting to listen to, he is a wonderful story-teller, and I am so impressed with all he has accomplished. He is such a great role model and has done wonderful wonderful wonderful things for our organization! Something that I didn't realize was that he is a volunteer. He does not get paid to be the President of the Board, and for the first time in years, our organization is in the black! woohoo! I have a copy of his book and I cannot wait to start reading.

The other guest speaker who is just always a delight to be around is our very own Miss America, Katie Stam. I really enjoy spending time with Katie because the more I get to know her and realize how real and down-to-Earth she is, the more that I am able to see that I am highly capable to be the next Miss America. I think that speaks a lot about Katie, because it is one of my personal goals to help young girls from my state realize that they too are more than capable to be Miss Vermont one day. Katie is everything I want in a Miss America, and I'm proud to call her my friend and role model.

On Sunday, I somehow caught a cold out of nowhere. I felt a bit under the weather, but I tried to stay in the moment and enjoy the opportunities that I was experiencing by being at the conference. I definitely walked away from my conference experience with a stronger sense of motivation and more defined personal goals for myself. I am very goal-oriented and am working very hard to achieve each goal I have set for myself. I can already scratch one thing off my list!

Saturday evening, each titleholder was asked to perform in the dinner show. I found out about this opportunity in August, and when I was asked what I was going to perform, I said I was going to sing. For those of you who don't know me as well, my talent is dancing, and I will be dancing at Miss America. But for the conference, I felt a need to sing, and I'm going to share the story that I shared with the audience on Saturday evening before I performed. (I can't remember exactly what I said, but it went a little something like this:)

"I was crowned Miss Vermont during the very last weekend in June, and after you become a state titleholder, you immediately receive a stack of paperwork that seems unending. As I was going through my paperwork, page by page, line by line, question by question, there was one question that really stuck out to me. The question read--'what is one thing that is out of character for you that you would like to try?'--when I read that question, I immediately knew my answer. To sing in front of a large audience. I have performed on stage for years, yet I have never sang a solo in front of an audience. And so when I was asked to perform for you all tonight, I knew I had to sing. What better time for me to try something new and to break out of my comfort zone than during my year as Miss Vermont where I am continuously learning and growing as a person? My personal platform revolves around youth empowerment, and who am I to tell young girls to follow their dreams, take a risk, and try something new, if I'm not willing to lead by example? And even though I know that my knees will be shaking and I have no idea what will end up coming out of my mouth, at least I can say I tried. So, although I will be dancing on the Miss America stage, for the first time in my life, I will be singing for you all..."

So, I sang for the first time. I scratched that off my list, and I feel comforted knowing that I accomplished what I set out to do. Something that I laugh about is that my vocal performance did not sound the same way that it did in the shower, but at least I tried! My voice cracked, my knees shaked, but I sang. And even though that goal is scratched off my list--I'm not going to give up. I'm going to take some voice lessons, improve my technique and increase my confidence...I can't end my vocal career with the icky sound of a cracked voice can I? Nope. I'm going to improve!

The day after I was crowned Miss Vermont, I was told that your year is what you make of it. Each Miss Vermont has her own year, and I am doing all that I can to make sure this year is one that I am proud of and one that I grow from. I owe it to my state, I owe it to all my supporters, I owe it to all the Miss Vermont volunteers, I owe it to all of my family who have sacrificed so much for my dreams, and I owe it to Laura Hall. I'm giving this year everything I have in me, knowing that holding this title is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it's an opportunity that is going to make a huge impact on my life. I am grateful every single day. Even when I'm tired, or feeling sick. I am so very grateful for the smiles I witness, the stories of inspiration and hope that I hear, and the continuous exposure to everyday miracles. Before I go to bed, I always, regardless of what happened that day, say thank you. So now that I'm getting ready to go to bed, I just have one last thing to say to all of you who take the time to read my blog:

Miss VT in NYC!

What an incredible weekend I just had, Vermont!

I woke up at 3:30am on Saturday morning to make it to the airport in time for my 6am flight to New York City! My mom and step-dad joined me on this journey and I am so thankful for their support and great sense of direction—without them traveling with me, I know that wouldn’t make it far out of the JFK airport. Coming from Vermont, where our biggest city of Burlington only has, what, 30-something thousand people?—the city is bit overwhelming, but it’s exciting! We traveled all over the city, and it seemed like we took every form of transportation that day except for boat. I had my first subway experience, and it wasn’t all that bad--except for the fact that the line we thought we were traveling on switched halfway through (luckily there are plenty of cabs in the city!) We did so much walking throughout the day that when I ordered a BBQ pulled-pork sandwich with fries at the Hard-Rock Café, I did not feel guilty!

The purpose of the NY trip was to learn the choreography for my talent routine that I will perform at Miss America! I met with my incredible choreographer, Shea, and her assistant Lael, for five hours and had an absolute blast! I love my dance and cannot wait to perform it on stage! (after I work on perfecting it of course!) I head back to NYC in December, and I’m already excited to see the Christmas lights and decorations that the city has to offer.

Our first mission when we arrived in the city was to purchase a pair of dance shoes—but not just any dance shoe…I went to La Duca where I got a pair of shoes from a store that the majority of Broadway stars purchase their shoes from! I am very happy with my purchase, I feel like I could be on Broadway when I wear these shoes, and what is even more impressive is that I did not get a single blister after dancing in them for the first time!

After that mission was accomplished, my parents and I wandered around the city, mostly the Times Square area, and we saw Radio City Music Hall which was in the process of being set up for the MTV VMAs. (It’s weird to think that just 24hours later, the controversy with Taylor Swift and Kayne West occurred. And while I’m talking about the VMAs—I definitely did not get inspired by any of Lady Gaga’s outfit choices, so no worries about my Miss America wardrobe! haha)

While in the city, we got stuck on the side of the street while a parade passed by, twice. Two parades in the same area in one day. I also almost got sideswiped by several couples wearing “Dash for the Diamond” T-shirts—which apparently was a NYC version of the “Amazing Race” where couples were racing to win the diamond engagement ring of their dreams. Gotta love NYC!

I really had a great trip to New York. I love all of the fashion, lights, and tall buildings. But, at the end of the very long and exhausting day, I was really happy to breathe in the crisp fresh Vermont air and sleep in my own bed at home. What a day!

On Sunday, I attended the final day of the “Miles for Wishes” event sponsored by the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. Over the course of 2 days, Vermont participants walked/ran 20 miles in order to raise money for the wonderful charity. I had the privilege of standing at the finish line, where I got to cheer on the runners and present them with a medallion as they crossed the line. I have a hard enough time running 3 miles—I was so proud of everyone who spent their weekend devoted to this charity and conquering some major mileage. The Make-A-Wish-Foundation of Vermont will be celebrating their 500th wish on October 17th. That’s absolutely incredible! I hope to partner with this organization throughout my year. I was truly inspired.

I am currently back at school, writing from my on-campus apartment. On Friday I head down to Framingham, Massachusetts (only a half hour away from my college) to attend the New England MAO Conference. It will be wonderful to reunite with my New England Miss America sisters, and Miss America Katie Stam! I also look forward to seeing several of the wonderful young women who participated in Miss Vermont this year! I recently looked over the itinerary and this weekend is going to be filled with many exciting opportunities and information! Can’t wait!

I had my first spinning class today, and that really wiped me out. Time for bed!

Productive Friday!

After spending the night battling allergies, tossing and turning, and unable to get a full dose of shut-eye, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I was able to accomplish today while running on only a couple hours of sleep. Today was jam-packed, but after being at college for a couple weeks, I knew I had to make the most of my long weekend here in Vermont. I love being home, and I'm so glad that I will be in Vermont on a regular basis again. My college courses are conveniently set up so that I have classes Tuesday--Thursday, leaving me with a full 4 days in the Green Mountain State each week. It's a four hour commute from college to home, but it's so worth it! I'm so thankful that Assumption College is so supportive of me, and I'm proud to be participating in a program that emphasizes the importance of education. Being a full-time senior in college where I also hold an executive position in the Student Government, while being Miss Vermont has made each and every day so busy, but it's so exciting and meaningful! I'm so thankful for all of the wonderful opportunities and experiences that I'm having this year, and I'm putting my all in everything I do. (So I don't mind losing a few hours of sleep here and there)

But back to today! I woke up around 6:30am, got ready and met up with my Nonni, who generously volunteered to be my traveling companion all day (Thanks Nonni!) We started by meeting up with one of my new sponsors, Michelle O'Brien, who is giving me electrolysis treatments (this may be a little bit of too much detail, but I'm never going to have to shave my armpits again! This makes me jump up and down with excitement!) I went into my appointment not knowing what to expect. While in the waiting room I read an informational brochure which made my stomach start to turn when I found out that these procedures use needles (for some reason I thought lasers were used). But as soon as I met Michelle she made me feel very relaxed and answered all of my questions. When the treatment started, I was amazed to find that there was no discomfort--it was a really easy treatment, especially since Michelle and I just chatted the entire time! She's going to Vegas soon for a conference--so I can't wait to hear about her experience in Miss America's host city.

At 10:45am, I headed to downtown Burlington to meet up with Cynthea at Cynthea's Spa. Cynthea is such a wonderful sponsor! Today she shaped my eyebrows beautifully (which with my eyebrows is no easy task!) and then I had my makeup done right outside on Church Street while shoppers were passing by. I served as a demonstration for Cynthea's promotional event that she had going on today. Anyone who was interested was able to get a free 5-minute makeover. Cynthea was willing to donate her time to help Vermonters know how to get a healthy, natural glow in 5 minutes or less. It was a neat experience and a great event. Cynthea can be found on Facebook and Twitter--you should definitely check out her pages!

After looking fabulous with my makeover, I hit a bit of frustration when my Nonni and I encountered some issues with modern-day technology. To make a long story short, we had to travel to several locations to print up some flyers and tickets for our big fundraiser that's happening in two weeks! brief description below:

Miss Vermont Calcutta: September 26th, at the RVA in Winooski. 6pm cocktail hour, 7pm all-you-can-eat dinner, 8pm the Calcutta begins! Tickets are $100/couple. Tons of prizes will be given away, and every 10th ball pulled will automatically win a prize! Prizes include an overnight hotel stay, restaurant gift certificates, golf bag and greens fees, and much much more! Grand Prize--minimum of $2,000 CASH prize. For every 30 tickets sold, the grand prize increases by $1,000. (SPREAD THE WORD!) Two raffles will occur during the night: 1 ball will be raffled off after 50 balls are pulled out of the game, and 1 ball will be raffled off to be guaranteed to be in the Top 10 remaining balls. Live entertainment, and the best part is that the proceeds of the event will be going to The Children's Miracle Network and the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization. In the afternoon I headed over to Eternity Web to meet with the company that sponsors the Miss Vermont wesite. I will be in charge of updating our website for the time-being, and it was great to meet with John to learn how to update the site! I hope to be able to start making changes to the site this week!

Wow, I just looked at the time and I really gotta hit the hay. I have so much more that I'd love to share about today, but I really need to rest up for tomorrow! I will be getting up at 3:45am tomorrow to catch a plane to New York City. My mom , stepdad Mike and I will be spending the day in the Big Apple and will be returning back to Vermont before the clock strikes midnight. I've never taken a plane to a destination and back home in one day before--it's weird to think that I'll be walking on a plane without having to check any luggage! But back tomorrow, why am I going to NYC? I'm going to learn my MISS AMERICA TALENT ROUTINE! I am so excited to finally learn the dance that will be the most important solo performance of my life! I absolutely love my talent song, and I know that the dance will be wonderful, I can already feel it! I have an incredible choreographer, and what better place to learn a Broadway jazz routine than right in Broadway?!

Hi Vermont!

So much to catch you up on! On Tuesday, August 11th, I headed out to sunny Orlando to cheer on Sarah Cramton at Miss America's Outstanding Teen! That Tuesday, Sarah performed her talent and I'm sad to say that I missed her beautiful rendition of "America The Beautiful!" I was sitting in the audience in awe of all of these outstanding young women gracing the stage, when right before Sarah was to perform, all of the Miss Contestants were escorted out of the audience to head backstage to be introduced on stage. It was such a bummer to miss her song, but I know she was awesome! I am proud to say that I got to see her compete in all of the other areas of on-stage competition, and Sarah truly shined! What a wonderful teen representative we have! And now, Sarah has the luxury of enjoying her year and attending appearances around the state without worrying about any competition! I cannot wait to continue hanging out with Sarah--she's our outstanding teen!

While in Orlando, I had the opportunity to meet all 52 women that I will be in Vegas with for Miss America! We were being filmed by TLC throughout the week, and had a great time making appearances and getting to know each other. On Wednesday, August 12th--we had a VIP tour of Universal Studios, where we never had to wait in line for a ride! What a treat! It has been years since I rode a rollercoaster and I'm proud to say that I went on every ride offered to us to go on--even The Hulk (and that was right after lunch too!) Speaking of lunch, we were fed an all-you-could-eat meal--and boy, did I eat! I use the excuse that I was "on vacation" to indulge in some delicious fried chicken, rice, a large coke, and chocolate cake! mmm....I also ate a fruit cup which balanced the meal haha. Another exciting appearance we made was at the Siegel Mansion where a fundraiser for the Miss America Organization was being held. It was nice to mingle and meet Florida residents, but what was really exciting and out-of-the-blue was the fact that Miss Vermont 1969 was the host of the event! Barbara West is an anchor in Orlando, Florida, and it was wonderful to meet a former Miss Vermont. Barbara is such a beautiful woman, it was great to have another Vermonter in the area! I also spotted 1 Vermont license plate while in the Sunshine State!

Wisconsin's Outstanding Teen is the new Miss America's Outstanding Teen--she was awesome on stage and I was blown away by her speaking abilities. Vermont should be very proud of our Sarah, she made some great friends and did a wonderful job representing us throughout the entire week! I'm proud of you Sarah!!

While in Florida, I made some great friends and connections that I am so thankful for. I am going to be working with Gregory Ellenburg for my Miss America Wardrobe, and I couldn't be happier! He has been such a wonderful resource, and the gowns I tried on were simply stunning. His guidance means the world to me, thank you Gregory!

I'm currently at Assumption College where I just finished two weeks of Leadership Training. I have gained some great skills and tips that I can hopefully share with Vermont students when I begin my school tour to promote my platform of "Youth Empowerment--Leaders of Today!"

On September 12th, I fly out to NYC to learn my talent routine! September 14th is the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization Golf Tournament, then I have a voice lesson with Shyla so that I can be ready to sing at the MAO New England Conference in Framingham, MA on the 19th/20th!

Classes started today for me, and I'm about to hit the gym for the second time today. Things are coming together nicely, and I cannot wait to get back to Vermont soon!

Hello Vermont!

It's currently 11:30pm (I'm sure it will be much later by the time I finish this post, as I have always been a slow writer), and I have no idea why I'm not taking the opportunity to catch up on some sleep. For the first time in weeks, I get to sleep past 6:30 am tomorrow--as I don't have to leave the house until 9 am tomorrow! I've always considered myself a night-owl, and after my freshmen year of college, I have not had any classes before 10am. Now that I'm Miss Vermont, a drastic switch in my sleep schedule has occurred, which leaves me jumping for joy anytime I can sleep until 8 am! I'm not sure if that makes sense, but it makes me laugh that I now consider "8 am" as "sleeping-in." I guess I'm choosing to stay awake because I've had such a jam-packed week and I'm eager to share!

Waking up at 6 am on Monday morning, my mom and I headed over to meet up with my nonni in South Burlington. Switching vehicles, Nonni drove us down to Natick Massachusetts where we set out on a day full of shopping! The trip was 4 hours down and 4 hours back, and my grandmother drove the entire way--she's not your average grandmother, my nonni is energetic, on-top-of-things and my official organizer! But back to the story--we drove for 8 hours in total, but ended up buying some great items for my upcoming trip to Orlando, Florida! I leave for Orlando on Tuesday and will be there until Sunday, August 16th. While in Florida, I will be cheering on our Outstanding Teen, meeting all of my Miss America sisters, and filming for two days with TLC (I have absolutely no details about what will be filmed, but I'm excited!). The trip to Natick was a great girls trip--the Natick Mall is the biggest mall I've ever been to, filled with so many shops that are not available in Vermont. It was almost overwhelming, but I feel good about my purchases. And although the ride was long, it was productive! I was able to brainstorm for my fundraisers, organize myself by writing out multiple "to-do" lists, and I even had an interview over the phone. I really do enjoy long car rides.

Tuesday, August 4th was such a fun day! Firstly, finishing my Miss America paperwork was a huge plus--but that night was National Night Out in South Burlington--an appearance I have been looking forward to since June! As a young girl, I began attending National Night Out, and to be there as Miss Vermont was fantastic! The night began with a parade, where I was able to ride in a green convertible--very appropriate for Vermont! My driver Mr. Long and his daughter Abi were great hosts to myself and Vermont's Junior Miss 2009, Alex Poirier, who rode on the back of the car with me! The parade was so fun, and it was great to see so many familiar faces throughout the night. I grew up in South Burlington and this was my very first appearance in my hometown. It meant so much to be surrounded by fellow South Burlington residents for the night--their love, support and excitement for my accomplishment was incredible! I met so many sweet and talented children that night. I had the opportunity to speak to the audience about my plans for the year, and I signed many many autographs with my new autograph cards! Thanks Champlain Valley Printing. Also, I got to test out my new car magnets for this parade-Thank you Watson family for your generous donation. The car magnets came out beautifully! The night ended up some beautiful fireworks--it was just such a wonderful appearance. I would relive that night over and over if I could. P.s.--I also met Governor Jim Douglas for the first time as Miss Vermont. We chatted about how we will most likely be seeing each other frequently this year--I can't wait!

Wednesday--I went to the Red Clover Salon and had a great session with Mary! Immediately after being pampered, I headed over to Exercise America where I was prepared to destroy the beautifully styled-hair I just had with an intense workout--instead, over running on the treadmill, David and I decided that we needed a Subway Sandwich...hahah so we ended our workout very quickly and talked about nutrition instead while munching on turkey subs. mmmm. I made up for that work out by running 4 additional miles when I got home.

Today was a busy day as well! My morning started with many many e-mails, then a great session with Exercise America, followed by a trip to Staples where my nonni and I printed a 100 flyers for my bottle drive this weekend. After a quick lunch break, we headed to Church Street to pick up one of my gowns for Orlando from Silver Threads (need something altered? Ask for Mindy--she's fantastic!), then picked up a donation from Kiss the Cook for my upcoming fundraiser, and then headed back to Nonni's house. I answered more e-mails (I'm currently serving as my own business manager) and then took a nice walk around the neighborhood where I handed out the bottle drive flyers. At 6pm I was invited to the Red Clover Salon for their "Expressions of Beauty" event for Vermont teenagers. It was a really neat event, and I was thrilled to be a part of it. I had the opportunity to chat with girls about the meaning of beauty, which led to such an interesting discussion. Thanks Red Clover Salon for inviting me to such a unique event!

Monday September 14th--I am hosting a charity golf tournament at Rocky Ridge where the proceeds from the event will go towards the Children's Miracle Network and the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization
Saturday September 26th--Calcutta! I will be hosting a very fun event, with many many prizes donated by such wonderful local Vermont companies. The grand prize for the Calcutta is $2,000. Tickets are $100/couple---more information to come!

Oh my goodness, I'm exhausted! It's 12:15 am now. I have more to write, but I suppose I'll just have to wait to share everything occurring right now! It's been such a busy and exhausting week, but I'm loving it!

End of July Update!

Hello Vermont,

I am writing to you after a fantastic long weekend with my family--although I am exhausted from all of the water-tubing, sunshine, and bbqs; I am also rejuvenated and ready to share with you some of the experiences I've had since I last updated. Each summer, the Hall side of my family gets together in Burlington, Vermont (all 25+ of us) for a family reunion. I come from a very close-knit family, and although the Halls are spread across Vermont, Massachusetts, Washington, Georgia and Ohio--we always find ways to see each other in Vermont--another reason why I love this state so much. Vermont=family. I just had to start this blog with a shout-out to the Halls, who have been tremendous supporters! I'm sure there will soon be photos floating around on Facebook of several family members wearing the crown and sash! Thank you all for a great weekend!

Last Sunday (July 26th)- Sarah Cramton and I traveled down to Boston to participate in Vermont Day at Fenway Park! My family and I are big Red Sox fans, so when the press release announcing Vermont Day surfaced, I immediately jumped on the opportunity to be a part of the experience! After sending out several e-mails, Cavin Heath from NESN granted my wish! He gave Sarah and I an opportunity of a lifetime by arranging for us to announce the starting line-up! Cavin--I need to publicly thank you for giving me such a memorable day! It was absolutely amazing!

I woke up at 4am on the 26th to drive down to Lebanon, NH where I met up with Sarah and her dad. Mr. Cramton was our "chauffeur/body guard/chaperone" for the day, and was also a big help with rehearsing our lines. During the entire four-hour ride, I was wishing away the rain clouds that the Vermont weather report had predicted. To prepare for a possible rain-shower, I wore pants, and packed a heavy-duty rain jacket, only to find that that was completely unnecessary. It was so hot in Boston! After a summer full of rainy days and cool nights, we found ourselves in one of the most hot, humid days--the type of day where you borrow a towel from the Red Sox dugout to wipe the sweat off your face. haha--well, that's what Sarah did! And she got to keep the towel too! Sarah and I knew ahead of time that we'd be announcing the line-up, but we had no idea that we would be sitting in the dugout while the Red Sox warmed up before the game. It was absolutely surreal! To be sitting on the bench where so many Red Sox legends have sat, (including my crush Jacoby Ellsbury)--wow! I immediately met Heidi Watney in the dugout, who was eating some Lake Champlain Chocolates, and then after filming the line-up, I met David Ortiz, also known as Big Papi! Filming the line-up was so much fun, I really enjoy being in front of the camera.

After we finished filming, Cavin Heath took Sarah and I on a tour of the NESN bus where they produce the games we see on TV. The NESN crew were so friendly and welcoming, and let us see a preview of the line-up before it was aired.

Sarah and I had incredible seats thanks to Mr. Mike LaVoie, who graciously donated our seats! This was my 4th time attending a Red Sox game, and although they unfortunately lost, it was such a special game to be at. The crowd was filled with Vermonters who continuously came up to me throughout the day to chat about the state we all love so much. I know I'll say this over and over, but the people of Vermont really make this title so enjoyable and meaningful. Knowing that Vermont has such a "small-town feeling" and thrives on community, it was great to see that the same remained true outside of our state lines in Boston. It was an honor to meet so many Red Sox-loving Vermonters!

This past week has been BUSY! Paperwork, fundraiser-planning, wardrobe shopping, making travel arrangements for Orlando, organizing my schedule, getting autograph cards made, and working out every day! It's been exhausting, but a very special thank you goes out to my Nonni! She has been there through it all, and is more help than she realizes!

After eating at Al's (my favorite cheeseburger joint) this weekend, I think it's time for me to go get some extra exercise.

Tomorrow I head down to Massachusetts with my mom and Nonni to finish up my wardrobe for Orlando! I leave on the 11th to go support Sarah at Miss America's Outstanding Teen! I will also be meeting all of my Miss America sisters and I couldn't be more thrilled!!

Is it already Monday?

While growing up, especially in high school, the question above became a part of my weekly routine. Somehow the weekend always flew by, leaving me to question that they actually existed as my alarm clock interrupted my much needed sleep. Is it already Monday?

Today, as Miss Vermont, I ask the same question. Only, instead of finding myself wondering where the weekend went, I'm wondering where the week went? As I am adjusting more and more to my new title, I'm finding that I am living the longest days but having the shortest weeks. The weeks are flying by, I cannot believe it's been over 3 weeks since being crowned Miss Vermont; pretty soon it'll be a whole month! But I have to tell you something, although the weeks are flying by, each day of being Miss Vermont has been such a blessing and I am carrying such distinct separate memories from each day. This past week has had a lot of wonderful memories--I'll share some of the highlights with you.

Just to warn you, I'm probably going to go out of order--why? why not?

Sunday, July 19th: While wearing my VIP pass (I'm not trying to sound smug...it was just soo awesome!), my mom and I arrived at the WOKO Country Music Festival where I was signed up to volunteer at one of the merchandise tents. Wearing the VIP pass was so exciting because I have attended this very music festival for years--and to now be attending as Miss Vermont was an incredible experience. As soon as we got through the gate and parked, my mom and I ran into Ashley (Miss VT 08) and Mrs. Wheeler--it was nice to catch up with them and they gave my mom and I some helpful advice. Ashley sang the National Anthem that day--how cool!

This music festival was special because it was serving as a send-off party for many of the Vermont troops that will be serving our country. It was such an honor to meet many of these individuals that will be deployed soon, and I hope they know how thankful we are for their service.

From 12pm-2pm, I volunteered at a merchandise table/donation table to raise money for the families of the Vermont National Guard. It was great to chat with fellow Vermonters, and enjoy the nice summer day! (Finally no rain!) I was told throughout the day that my photo was going to go on different people's facebook pages--so be on the look-out. Knowing how small our state is, it's very possible that I met some of your friends yesterday! haha. Speaking of friends--I ran into many familiar faces yesterday! It was great to see some of my girlfriends--Christine, Heidi and Maria--along with my first dance teacher, Angie Nulty! I also ran into 2 Miss Vermont/Outstanding Teen girls--Alayna Westcom and Erin Connor!

Keith Anderson was one of the performers yesterday, and I was able to get a little shout-out from him as I went to the front of the stage to take his picture. He pointed to my crown and said something that I couldn't make out during his song--but nonetheless, as a country music fan, it was exciting! --Before I change events, I need to thank my mom for being my chaperone for the day!

(On Sunday, I also chose my talent song!! As soon as it is confirmed, I will let you in on what I'll be performing on the Miss America stage!)

On Thursday, July 16th--I visited the Red Clover Salon for the first time as Miss Vermont, and I met my hairstylist for the year! Her name is Mary, and she is soo awesome! I really appreciate this special sponsor, because I need some major hair help! As of right now, I have 2 hair styles--I either wear my hair completely down, or up in a ponytail. I'm sure after meeting with Mary, I'll have some more styles to work with! Thank you Red Clover for your generous support!

On Friday, July 17th, I met with Wayne Tarr in St. Albans, to take my official head shots for Miss America! Wayne was soo easy going and fun to work with! I had so much fun in front of the camera and I can't wait to see the photos! Thank you Wayne!

I have been working out at Exercise America with David every day! And after I finish this blog, I will be getting ready to do some more working out! I am on a time crunch with my paperwork so any free moment that I have, I have been working on getting that all done so it can be completed in a timely fashion.

I just booked my tickets for Orlando! I will be there August 11th-16th to cheer on our outstanding teen, Sarah Cramton! Sarah has been working hard and I know she will be FANTASTIC at Miss America's Outstanding Teen!

My step-dad Mike has been amazing with helping me plan two very big fundraisers. He has been calling companies all over Vermont in request of some prize donations, and we have had great results! The first event--our Charity Golf Tournament will be September 14th! Mark your calendars! More information on our second fundraising event soon!

Nonni--you get the ultimate shout out and thank you for this week! My nonni has been incredible--serving as both chauffeur and chaperone! She is on top of everything and I really appreciate all of her help!

Hello Vermont!

These past few days have been busy! I'm not even sure where to start. I guess I'll start by giving a shout out to my new friends at Exercise America in South Burlington. Last Thursday, my personal trainer David had me attend not one, but two of his group fitness classes. Two classes right in a row. We're talking about 2 1/2 hours of continuous workout here! Maybe that doesn't sound like a lot, but for me, it was intense! The only thing that kept me moving and not dropping to the ground was the endless amount of energy that radiated from each individual in the class. They may not recognize this, but they are all very inspiring to me. David had us circuit training and continually changing up the exercise we were working on: from pull-ups to burpees to abs to push ups to sprinting...it was exhausting! But the energy and support of every person in that room was just wonderful. Thank you to all my fitness friends--I'm going to work on my running skills haha.

On July 10th, I drove down to Worcester, Massachusetts to go visit my school, Assumption College. I truly have to thank Assumption for all of their support and congratulatory messages after the news of my title spread down to Massachusetts. I received personal cards from Assumption's President and Dean of Students, along with countless e-mails from administration/faculty/staff members, and hugs from all those who I came in contact with during my visit Friday. Dr. Catherine Woodbrooks (Assumption's Vice President of Student Affairs)--I cannot wait to get a picture of me crowning you next time I'm at school! Knowing that I have support from my home away from home is just so incredible.

While at Assumption, I met with some of my Student Government Executives. Before I won the title of Miss Vermont, I was elected by the Class of 2010 to serve as Senator for the 4th year, and then the Senate selected me to hold the executive position of Senate Speaker. Having two very important roles this year will be chaotic, but I truly believe everything happens for a reason, and that God believes I am capable of serving both roles. I guess this is a good time to explain what my year will look like. I am entering my senior year and I will be a full-time student this year. However, I have set my schedule up so that I have classes only 3 days a week, which will allow me to spend 4 days in Vermont. My school is not too far from Southern Vermont, so I will even be able to do day trips if an appearance arises. It will be a busy year with traveling, but I know this is so worth it! One of my directors, Megan Plebani, is located in Massachusetts and my other director is close to my home in Vermont. Wherever I am, I will be supported and will be working to be the best Miss Vermont that I can be!

Ok back to the update...

While at Assumption, I did some SGA work for fall training and then had the chance to watch the Friday night preliminary for Miss Massachusetts. Saturday night was so exciting, because I not only got to meet the new Miss Massachusetts, but I also got to meet Miss Connecticut, Miss New Hampshire, Miss Rhode Island and Miss Minnesota! I love meeting the girls that I will be sharing the Miss America stage with. It is so surreal to know that I will be creating a wonderful sisterhood with the Miss America Class of 2010. I am so blessed to be Miss Vermont 2009.

This week is my busiest week as Miss Vermont yet! Between working out every day and working on my paperwork, I also have many side projects going on. I am working on a bunch of fundraisers to pay for my expenses as Miss Vermont and to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. I will be hosting a golf tournament in September (look for details soon) and a Calcutta for the beginning of August (look for details even sooner). This Saturday I have having a huge bottle drive in South Burlington. I had a meeting today with a restaurant who is going to let me fundraise there sometime in the next couple months--I am soo thankful for the supporters who are helping me raise money to have the best year of my life. I am a young woman who truly benefits from the scholarship money that the Miss America Organization provides. The $6,000 I won this June pays for nearly my entire first semester at college--that is huge for me! Especially considering the amount of debt I will have in student loans by the time I graduate.

I have some great appearances coming up--I am waiting for the confirmation for a very exciting appearance for this Sunday--I'll wait to surprise you with the details soon!

I will be visiting my hair sponsor, Red Clover Salon on Thursday to get my Miss Vermont makeover. I cannot wait to get my hair styled! Friday, I will be taking my Miss America head-shot with Wayne Tarr in St. Albans. I can't wait! I just need to figure out what to wear!

Today I had a great lunch with Kesha Ram, the youngest legislator in Vermont! She is 22 years old and I am so excited to partner with her this year to spread our shared passion of Youth Empowerment across the Green Mountain State. I cannot wait to see the impact that we can make together. She is wonderful and Burlington is lucky to have her representing us! She will be so helpful with reaching my platform to different age groups.

I need to send a special shout out to Mike A. My chauffeur, chaperone, photographer and purse-holder! haha you are so wonderful and this weekend wouldn't have been possible without your help.

Well, I suppose I should be getting back to some of my paperwork.

Thank you Harry for sending me this clip today. It brought tears to my eyes--what a moment! It gives me chills and reminds me how proud and humble I should be to represent such a wonderful state.

Feel The Burn

Last week while driving home with my step-dad, I received a phone call from a number that I didn't recognize. Normally I avoid answering the phone unless I know who is on the other line, but now that I am Miss Vermont I realize the importance of answering every phone call. A missed call could be a missed opportunity. When I answered the phone, the warm voice of our Miss America, Katie Stam, came on the line--and it was at that moment, that it finally sunk in--I'm going to Miss America.

The funny thing about that phone call was that I had just bit into a huge brownie from a local bakery when the phone rang. I interpret that phone call as a sign that I really need to lay off the junk food. haha

Something that my personal trainer, David Chess of Exercise America in South Burlington, quickly picked up on about me is that I can be quite the procrastinator. I guess you can look at the story above as an example of how implement this skill. Within two days of working with my trainer, I think he knows more about me than some of my friends at college. I guess I subconsciously delay our training sessions by chatting and laughing with David...only he's totally picked up on this!

I've never been an athlete. In fact, when I was a junior in high school, I had just transferred to the Williston Northampton School in Massachusetts where they encourage students to try a sport. That spring when I was 17 years old, I tried out to be on the softball team. Well, long story short, I ended making the JVB team, which essentially was the middle school team. I was the oldest member of that team, and I'm pretty sure I got hit with the ball more times that I actually hit it--but it makes for a great story now.

So back to my point. I've never been an athlete, and I've always looked for alternative methods to exercise. I love to dance, but I also make use of the Green Mountain State by going hiking and taking long walks among the beautiful scenery that Vermont provides. I have some great work out tapes from the 80's (my personal favorite being Tami Lee's Buns of Steel)--but when it comes down to it, I am just not a girl who enjoys being in a gym--until now (sorta).

I started working with my trainer two days ago, and I really really feel the burn! David is great at creating workouts that continually switch up the different body parts I work on, and he has made me work out muscles that I didn't even know existed. He is very knowledgeable, but he balances his knowledge with his great sense of humor. He has been so generous volunteering his time to help Miss Vermont out that I'm sending him a Shout Out and a HUGE Endorsement for anyone who is considering working with a trainer. WORK WITH DAVID!! He also has a pretty cool dog that can jump over mattresses--now that should be enough to persuade you!

So right now as I type this, I am in pain. Especially in my quads. (I know that sentence is a fragment, but that's ok-I hope you'll let it slide.) But even though I feel the burn, I also feel the sense of accomplishment. It's a good type of pain I guess--because I know I'm one lunge, burpee, squat, pull-up, push-up, and jog closer to my ultimate goal.

I'm going to go get some aspirin now...so have a great night everyone!

Don't Rain on My Parade!

Well--it rained! All weekend. Our 4th of July weekend was quite a rainy sight here in Vermont, but that didn't stop the fun!

This weekend I made my first official public appearance as Miss Vermont, and I am soo thrilled to start making my mark as Miss Vermont 2009. Sarah Cramton (VTOT) and I were invited to be in the Montpelier 4th of July Parade and we had a blast! It was great to start our journey of appearances at our state's capital! Sarah and I rode in a car from the 1930s, and our driver, Chuck, was soo entertaining to ride with. He and Sarah had me laughing the entire time...they are both "cheeky"--according to Chuck.

On Saturday July 4th, my mom, step-dad, and dog Tucker (you'll probably learn a lot about my Tucker this year--so get ready!) ventured over to Morrisville, Vermont. I was invited to be in their parade, and I had a great time! The weather, in true Vermont fashion, kept switching between rain and clear skies--but my awesome driver, Ken, insisted on keeping the top of his Mustang convertible down the entire time. I didn't mind getting wet, but I hope the water didn't harm his interior! It was great to meet and greet with Vermonters, and I know that the people I meet this year will be a true highlight of my year!

After being in two parades in less than 18 hours, I got to have the afternoon of the 4th off to spend with my family.

Today, Sunday, we had a beautiful sunny day! I spent the day in Burlington, Vermont. Church Street was lively as always, Al's French Frys was fabulous as always (my 2nd and probably last time going since being crowned Miss Vermont! I meet with my trainer tomorrow haha) and seeing my family was awesome (you guessed it) as always! I got to visit with my aunt, uncle, and grandfather at my Grandpa Hall's house. After a nice visit I then headed over to South Burlington for a family bbq at my Nonni's house. I've already realized that my family will really be an important part of my year as Miss Vermont. My family keeps me grounded and in touch with reality--they help me realize who I am/who I want to be, which in return will hopefully lead to a stronger Miss Vermont. (Does that make sense?) I think I need to avoid writing these blogs when I'm exhausted haha.

Being Miss Vermont is truly a humbling experience, and I am loving every minute of this journey! I am soo blessed to have so much love and support behind me, and I know all of your kind words and positive energy will be the fuel that keeps me running and working towards being the best Miss Vermont I can be.

Tomorrow I meet my trainer for the first time! I'm sure that there will be an update about that experience soon! haha--I have always opted for alternative methods of working out, so being in a real gym should be interesting! I'm excited, but I already feel completely clueless! haha

Thank you everyone for all of your support. All of the e-mails, phone calls, text messages, and facebook messages are incredible! Your support is truly inspiring me to work hard hard hard!

Today I created a facebook account that will keep anyone interested completely updated on what's going on with my title. I will be uploading photos on a regular basis! I will list that link soon! Miss Vermont has been a huge goal of mine since I was a teenager. The support that I've received so far has been incredible! I am always open and willing to hear feedback, comments, suggestions and advice. Hopefully I will have enough contact sources for you to reach me!

I will be having a very busy 4th of July weekend, so keep an eye open for me! I'd love to meet as many Vermonters as possible!

What a weekend!

Wow! This has been one of the most humbling moments of my life. I was crowned a less than 48 hours ago, and I cannot even begin to explain all of the thoughts running through my head! I cannot wipe the smile off my face--not only because of this wonderful opportunity that I’ve been given, but because I keep thinking about the amazing weekend I had with 12 of Vermont’s most fantastic young women! Wow!

There is so much I want to share—and I really hope to keep Vermont well informed on my year—our year. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the wonderful people in my life; many of them Vermonters. It was here in Vermont that I learned the importance of community service and lending a helping hand. It was here in Vermont that I became inspired and empowered to be the best I can be. I have grown into a young woman that I am truly proud of, and I owe many thanks to the Green Mountain State. I hope I can be a Miss Vermont that you are all proud of.

That being said, I am in the process of working on promoting the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization through various methods of social media. I am starting with my blog, and I hope to soon add Facebook and Twitter to the list. I will let you know when those are available!

Now, I must try to share how incredible this weekend was...All of the contestants arrived at the Sheraton Burlington Thursday afternoon. (The Sheraton is such a generous and valuable sponsor of the Miss Vermont Scholarship Program—if you ever need a place to stay, I definitely recommend this hotel!) Luckily, I had met all of the girls the prior Sunday, so instead of feeling anxious or nervous, I felt calm, relaxed and excited! I immediately found out that I was rooming with Amy Gillespie, and we quickly learned that we were the perfect roommate pair. (We’re both night people! haha and we stayed up WAYY too late, but had soo much fun!) For dinner we went to Ray DeGiovine’s beautiful home, and were fed a delicious meal. In fact, right now I should give a shout out to the Johnson Family who provided all of our amazing meals! Thank you! We enjoyed our time at Ray’s, and then headed back to our hotel to meet with Intuitive Counselor and Medium, Nan O’brien. She spoke with us about her experience with the Miss America Organization and she helped us all maintain a positive mindset. Nan is soo engaging, and has a great personality! She came backstage Saturday night to give us an inspirational pep-talk and I hope to receive many more pep-talks during my year as Miss Vermont—she is too cool!

Our interviews were Friday morning, and everyone left the interview room feeling confident and happy about their performance. Walking out of the interview with a smile on your face is one of the best feelings. Just ask Sydney Bard---haha I got to witness her awesome “happy dance!” that happened after her successful interview. After interviews were over, we all decided to start our rehearsals early by strutting our stuff down the hallways of the Sheraton. It was soo funny, and I believe our first runner-up, Caroline Bright, has a hilarious video of it. (I might have to steal that Caroline!)

Rehearsals were long, but I hope it’s safe to say that all 13 of us had so much fun in the process of learning all of our staging for the big show! Mama Liz—thanks for your dressing room help! All of the hostesses-Barb, Juli, Beth, Bethany—were incredible!

Saturday was the day we were all anticipating—and it left me in complete shock as I proudly shared my crowning moment with Caroline Bright—she is a doll! Mary Branagan was named second runner-up and many of our contestants won additional awards at the end of the night.
I cannot remember my reaction after my name was called—I guess I’ll have to wait for the DVD—but I know it felt amazing! I had such fantastic fans at the pageant, and many who sent their well-wishes for me before the show. Thank you! Having four generations of women watching me win this title was incredible, along with both of my grandfathers who have never seen a pageant. (I guess this was a good one to attend!) My boyfriend Michael and his mother, college friends-Alex (fellow Vermonter and my roommate!) and Dan, family friend/loudest cheerer Kiki, along with my cousins Katie, Chase and Ali, and Uncle Cort and Aunt Pam—It was great having you in the audience, thanks for coming! Dad and Katie—thanks for driving 4 hours to watch—on the behalf of my dad I will share that he is very excited for the $6,000 I won in scholarship money!

My mom and Nonni are really responsible for much of my success. Their endless support, love, patience, and positive energy helped make me feel prepared for the most amazing experience I’ve had yet! And I know they’ll be vital in my success for the upcoming year.

Sunday morning, after sleeping for 4 hours, I had a great brunch with my image consultant Sue Lackey, Miss Vermont 2005-Megan Plebani, VT’s Outstanding Teen Sarah Crampton and her parents, along with my mom. It was information overload but I’m soo excited for a busy year with these great people! I was interviewed by two news stations, and I received a phone call for my first appearance! Wow, all under 24 hours of being crowned.

Today (Monday June 29th)- I had an interview for the Valley Voice, and several interview requests for this week! Not to mention that the 4th of July weekend will definitely keep me busy with appearances! I look forward to traveling our BEAUTIFUL state!

Thank you EVERYONE for your supportive messages. After I won, I had so many text messages waiting for me, along with countless Facebook messages and I keep getting them!! You are all amazing and your support inspires me to be the best Miss Vermont I can be!

Thank you Sarah Jo Willey, Hannah Nelson Manley, Amy Johnson Jackman, Harry Benoit. Robert Willey and all of the hard-working volunteers who made the Miss Vermont Pageant so entertaining and professional! Dana Rosengard—you are hilarious and a great emcee! All of your hard work is greatly appreciated.

Oh I forgot! I got to meet my first Miss America sister—Miss Delaware! Heather is such a sweetheart, and I’m looking forward to seeing her this August in Orlando at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen!

It is with great pride and excitement that I can introduce myself as your Miss Vermont! I have big shoes to fill—Ashley Wheeler was such a fabulous representative and role model. I hope I can model her warmth and determination. She is simply incredible.

Thank you Vermont for all you have done for me, and I’m sure this year will be one that I will NEVER forget!
